Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha highlights inclusive growth, OBC empowerment, education support, law and order improvements, and welfare initiatives at a state-level award ceremony in Agartala, reaffirming the government’s commitment to socio-economic development.
Tripura Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha on Tuesday reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to inclusive development, stating that the primary objective of the government is to serve people and ensure that welfare benefits reach every marginalised section of society, including Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
Speaking at a state-level award distribution ceremony held at Pragya Bhavan, organised by the Department of Other Backward Classes Welfare, the Chief Minister said that accelerated socio-economic development of backward and vulnerable communities would directly contribute to the overall progress of the state. He noted that Tripura has emerged as one of the leading states in the country in implementing development-oriented programmes effectively.
The event marked the inauguration of the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Gold Medal Award, the Vidyasagar Social and Cultural Award, and the distribution of one-time financial assistance to economically backward meritorious OBC students. At the beginning of the programme, dignitaries paid floral tributes to the portraits of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Dr B.R. Ambedkar as a mark of respect.
Chief Minister Dr Saha highlighted that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office, special emphasis was placed on improving the socio-economic conditions of backward classes and other vulnerable sections across the country. He said this commitment was clearly reflected in the recent Union Budget and continues to guide national development policies. Aligning with this vision, the Tripura government has been implementing multiple schemes aimed at uplifting OBC communities.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s long-term vision, Dr Saha said that the goal is to ensure inclusive development of every marginalised group and to build a “Developed India” by 2047 through sustained improvements in socio-economic indicators. He stressed that achieving this goal requires a collective change in mindset and active participation from all sections of society.
Providing statistical insights, the Chief Minister stated that Tripura has an OBC population of approximately 9.04 lakh individuals across more than 2.24 lakh families. He added that the government has placed special focus on women empowerment within backward communities and on promoting education among girls.
Dr Saha also touched upon the state’s law and order situation, noting that Tripura is currently witnessing its lowest crime rate in the last 20 years. He described this achievement as a strong indicator of effective governance and improved public safety. Reflecting on the past, he said that tribal youths were once misled and pushed towards extremist activities, but the present government is committed to fostering peace, harmony, and inclusive growth to build a “New Tripura” with the participation of all communities.
Addressing the gathering, Social Welfare Minister Santana Chakma said the state government is implementing a wide range of welfare schemes to accelerate the socio-economic development of OBC communities. These initiatives include scholarships for students, construction of hostels, and various forms of financial and institutional support to ensure educational continuity and empowerment.
Chairman of the OBC Cooperative Development Corporation, M.K. Nath, attended the programme as a special guest. The welcome address was delivered by Tapas Ray, Secretary of the OBC Welfare Department, while Director Nirmal Adhikari proposed the vote of thanks.
During the ceremony, meritorious OBC students who secured top positions in Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Board examinations were awarded the prestigious Dr B.R. Ambedkar Gold Medals. The Chief Minister also presented the Vidyasagar Social and Cultural Awards to Sajjal Acharya, Sukumar Chandra Nath Bhowmik, and Kajal Chandra Nath in recognition of their significant contributions to society.

Ambedkar Memorial Merit Award is not merely a recognition but a powerful motivation for students to pursue excellence through education and contribute meaningfully to society.
