GMP announces full-scale contest in all 28 ADC seats at its Central Committee meet in Agartala, accusing the BJP-led government of corruption, ideological imposition, and failure in tribal governance ahead of Tripura’s crucial ADC elections.

The Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (GMP) has formally resolved to contest all 28 seats in the forthcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, marking a decisive shift toward an all-out political and ideological confrontation with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies.

The resolution was adopted during the organization’s 23rd Central Committee Conference, held over two days on January 29 and 30 at Agartala Town Hall, in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan. The event witnessed significant participation from party delegates, senior leaders, and national-level figures associated with tribal rights movements, reflecting what GMP leaders described as renewed organizational strength and political confidence.

Addressing the media after the conference, newly elected GMP President Naresh Jamatia, General Secretary Radhacharan Debbarma, and senior leader Pranab Debbarma asserted that the party is fully prepared to challenge the BJP’s dominance in the ADC. Radhacharan Debbarma stated that GMP would fight the elections “inch by inch,” rejecting the ruling party’s repeated claims of sweeping all seats in the council polls.

The conference was also attended by prominent national leaders of the All India Forum for Tribal Rights, including Jiten Choudhury, Brinda Karat, and former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who participated in deliberations and extended support to the organization’s future political roadmap.

As part of organizational restructuring, the conference approved the formation of a 25-member working committee, which includes six newly inducted members, while a 137-member central committee was reconstituted. Party leaders said the restructuring was aimed at strengthening grassroots outreach and enhancing electoral preparedness ahead of the crucial ADC elections.

During his address, Radhacharan Debbarma launched a sharp attack on the BJP–IPFT alliance, accusing it of turning the ADC into a center of corruption, administrative decay, and financial mismanagement. He alleged that employment opportunities have declined sharply, development resources are being misused, and public assets created during previous Left Front administrations are now being leased or mortgaged under the current regime.

Debbarma also criticized Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, accusing him of neglecting his administrative responsibilities toward the autonomous council. He claimed that despite repeated assurances, the chief minister has failed to hold review meetings at Khumulwng, the ADC headquarters, undermining governance and accountability in tribal areas.

The conference adopted a 10-point charter of demands, addressing issues related to employment, land rights, cultural identity, education, and administrative autonomy. GMP leaders announced plans to intensify agitation programs, mass mobilization, and political campaigns across tribal regions in the coming months to press for these demands.

Raising ideological concerns, Radhacharan Debbarma accused the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of attempting to impose their ideological framework on tribal communities. He emphasized the long-standing demand for the use of Roman script for Kokborok, calling it an issue of cultural dignity and linguistic justice.

In a strongly worded speech, GMP President Naresh Jamatia described the BJP-led government as a “new fascist regime” and urged tribal communities to unite against what he termed growing authoritarianism. He also targeted TIPRA Motha, asserting that while the BJP remains the principal adversary, other political forces have also failed to safeguard tribal interests.

“The fight ahead is not just electoral; it is political, ideological, and social,” Jamatia said, calling for unity among democratic forces to counter what he described as divisive and extremist influences.

With the declaration to contest all ADC seats, GMP has positioned itself as a key challenger in the upcoming elections, setting the stage for an intense political battle that is expected to shape the future of tribal governance in Tripura.
