Former Uttarakhand MP Tarun Vijay visits Tripura to meet Angel Chakma’s family after her Dehradun murder. The case sparks national outrage, SIT investigation, arrests, and renewed concerns over Northeast student safety across India.

Former Uttarakhand Member of Parliament Tarun Vijay arrived in Tripura on Thursday as part of a solidarity visit following the brutal murder of Angel Chakma in Dehradun, an incident that has sent shockwaves across the country. His visit aims to express condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirm the Uttarakhand government’s commitment to justice.

Tarun Vijay is scheduled to meet Angel Chakma’s family on Friday, conveying sympathy and official support on behalf of the Uttarakhand administration. The killing of the young student has sparked nationwide outrage, particularly among communities from the Northeast, reviving long-standing concerns over the safety and security of students studying outside their home states.

Angel Chakma’s death has triggered widespread protests, emotional appeals, and calls for stricter action against crimes targeting students from the Northeast in metropolitan and educational hubs across India. Civil society groups, student organizations, and political leaders have demanded fast-track justice and stronger institutional safeguards to prevent such tragedies.

The Uttarakhand Police have arrested four accused individuals in connection with the murder. However, the prime accused is believed to have fled across the border to Nepal, prompting intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation, with authorities coordinating across states and international borders to trace the absconding suspect.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has publicly assured that all those responsible will face the strictest punishment under the law. He emphasized that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated and pledged swift justice for the victim and her family.

Both the Uttarakhand and Tripura governments have announced financial assistance for Angel Chakma’s family as an immediate relief measure. Leaders in Tripura have also pledged full administrative and emotional support during this period of grief, underscoring solidarity with the family and the wider Chakma community.

During his Tripura visit, Tarun Vijay met Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu earlier in the day. He is also expected to hold discussions with Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, focusing on inter-state cooperation, student safety, and preventive mechanisms to protect students from the Northeast studying across India.

The tragic death of Angel Chakma has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety policies, sensitization programs, and accountability to ensure that students can pursue education anywhere in the country without fear or discrimination.
