A tragic road accident claimed the lives of two youths, including a Class XII school student, after a head-on collision between two motorcycles in the Baranarayan area under Sonamura subdivision on Wednesday afternoon. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and renewed concerns over road safety and traffic enforcement in the region.
The deceased have been identified as Diptanu Debnath, a Class XII student of Sonamura Baranarayan School, and Jiaur Rahman (21). According to official sources, the fatal accident occurred at around 2:30 pm in the Taijjamura (Baganbari) area under Baranarayan, which falls within the Dhanpur Assembly Constituency.
Eyewitnesses reported that two motorcycles collided head-on at high speed, resulting in severe injuries to the riders. The impact of the collision was so intense that Diptanu Debnath sustained critical injuries and died on the spot. Other injured youths were immediately rushed to nearby medical facilities by local residents and emergency responders.
Initially, the injured were taken to the Dhanpur Primary Health Centre, where doctors provided emergency treatment. However, due to the seriousness of their injuries, they were referred to the Melaghar Sub-Divisional Hospital for advanced medical care. Later, two critically injured youths were further shifted to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala, the state’s premier referral hospital.
Despite intensive treatment, Jiaur Rahman succumbed to his injuries during treatment at GB Pant Hospital, raising the death toll from the accident to two. The deaths of two young lives, particularly that of a school student with a promising future, have deeply affected the residents of the area.
Upon receiving information about the accident, Dhanpur MLA Bindu Debnath rushed to the Dhanpur Primary Health Centre and later followed up on the medical treatment of the injured patients. The MLA expressed grief over the loss of lives and assured support to the affected families.
Local residents alleged that lack of traffic discipline, reckless driving, and inadequate enforcement of road safety rules have contributed to repeated accidents in the Baranarayan and Sonamura areas. They urged the administration to strengthen traffic monitoring, install speed-control measures, and conduct awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies in the future.
