A violent attack by 50–60 masked miscreants in Dharmanagar’s Durgapur area left residents terrified. The gang vandalized property, looted jewelry, and set fire to a motorcycle before fleeing. Police launched an urgent investigation into the shocking incident.
Panic gripped the Durgapur locality of Dharmanagar on Tuesday night after a large group of masked assailants stormed a residence, unleashing chaos and destruction. The incident, which occurred around 9 p.m., has left residents deeply shaken and calling for swift police action.
According to eyewitnesses, about 50–60 masked men, allegedly led by a local youth named Hafiz, carried out the violent assault on the home of Shipon Chowdhury, a member of the local Sonali Shibir Club. The attackers were reportedly armed with sharp weapons and blunt objects, striking fear throughout the neighborhood.
Residents said the group first surrounded the house before attempting to break in. Inside, an elderly woman — believed to be Shipon’s mother — was alone at the time. She managed to save herself by locking the doors from inside as the mob tried to force entry.
Household Vandalized and Property Destroyed
In a matter of minutes, the attackers unleashed widespread destruction. They broke windows, doors, and household furniture, causing severe property damage. An air conditioner unit was also smashed. Witnesses added that the gang torched a motorcycle parked in the courtyard, reducing it to ashes.
Before leaving, the attackers allegedly looted jewelry from the elderly woman, including a gold chain and bangles. The entire episode unfolded so quickly that neighbors could only watch in horror, unable to intervene for fear of being attacked themselves.
Links to Local Criminal Activities Suspected
Several locals have alleged that the gang leader, Hafiz, has a long history of involvement in illegal drug trade and extortion in the Dharmanagar area. Despite past allegations and community complaints, they claim little has been done to curb his criminal activities.
“Everyone here knows Hafiz and his gang. They’ve been involved in multiple incidents, but the fear of retaliation keeps people silent,” said one resident on condition of anonymity.
While a few of the assailants were identified by locals, most remained unrecognizable due to their faces being covered with masks and scarves.
Police Response and Investigation Underway
The Dharmanagar police reached the scene soon after receiving reports of the attack. Officers cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence, including CCTV footage from nearby houses and shops.
A senior police officer confirmed that an investigation is in progress. “We are verifying the identities of those involved and will take strict action once the culprits are apprehended. No one will be spared,” the officer stated.
Forensic teams are expected to visit the site to assess property damage and gather further clues. Police have also deployed patrols across sensitive zones in Durgapur to prevent any further unrest.
Community in Fear, Residents Demand Justice
The shocking nature of the incident has sparked outrage and fear across Dharmanagar. Residents gathered near the vandalized home on Wednesday morning, demanding swift arrests and strict punishment for those responsible.
“This was not just an attack on one family — it’s an attack on our community’s peace and safety,” said a neighbor. “If such gangs can roam freely, no one is safe.”
Community leaders have urged law enforcement agencies to increase night patrols and take decisive action against known offenders to restore public confidence.
Growing Concern Over Rising Crime
The attack highlights growing concerns about organized crime and gang violence in smaller towns across Tripura. Local residents allege that a lack of strict policing and delayed investigations have emboldened repeat offenders.
