Tripura to celebrate 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’ with year-long state-wide events starting November 7, 2025. The celebrations, led by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, will honor India’s freedom spirit through four phases of cultural programs.
The Tripura government has announced a grand year-long celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’, beginning November 7, 2025. The initiative aims to honor the historic role of the song in India’s freedom struggle and its enduring legacy as a symbol of patriotism and unity.
Announcing the decision on Wednesday, Transport Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Sushanta Chowdhury said that the celebrations will be held in four phases across all districts and subdivisions of the state. The Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department has been appointed as the nodal agency to coordinate the statewide events under the broader national initiative launched by the Ministry of Culture.
“The Ministry of Culture has communicated the decision to all states via video conferencing. Following this, we have prepared a detailed schedule for the year-long observance,” Chowdhury said at a press conference in Agartala.
Inaugural Ceremony at Civil Secretariat
The grand inaugural ceremony will take place at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala on November 7, 2025, and will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. The event will officially launch the first phase of the celebrations, which will include cultural performances, patriotic songs, exhibitions, and seminars dedicated to the legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’.
The minister stated that parallel programmes will be conducted in all eight districts of Tripura, ensuring public participation from every corner of the state.
-
Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee will attend the West Tripura district event.
-
Minister Sushanta Chowdhury himself will join the celebrations in Sepahijala district.
-
Minister Pranajit Singha Roy will grace the event in Gomati district, while Minister Shukla Charan Noatia will attend the South Tripura programme.
-
In Khowai district, Minister Bikash Debbarma and Tipra Motha leader Animesh Debbarma are expected to be present.
-
Minister Santana Chakma, Minister Tinku Roy, and Minister Sudhangshu Das will represent North Tripura, Unakoti, and Dhalai districts, respectively.
Chowdhury added that Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu has also been invited to attend the Dhalai district observance, and confirmation of his presence is awaited.
Celebrations at Every Level
Beyond the district-level events, the state government plans to extend the observance to sub-divisional headquarters, municipalities, and urban local bodies. Local Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will play active roles in these events to ensure community engagement and participation.
These programmes will include patriotic parades, essay competitions, cultural exhibitions, and youth-oriented awareness campaigns centered around the theme of national unity and heritage.
‘Vande Mataram’: The Spirit of India’s Freedom Struggle
Describing ‘Vande Mataram’ as “the soul of India’s freedom movement,” Chowdhury recalled how Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s timeless composition inspired countless freedom fighters during India’s struggle for independence.
“It is a matter of great pride that we will be celebrating 150 years of this immortal song, which continues to inspire generations of Indians,” the minister said.
Originally composed in 1875 and included in Bankim Chandra’s novel Anandamath in 1882, Vande Mataram became a rallying cry for Indian nationalists and was later adopted as India’s national song. Its powerful words, meaning “I bow to thee, Mother,” symbolize devotion to the motherland and the unity of the people.
Cultural Significance and National Integration
The year-long celebration in Tripura aims to rekindle patriotic fervor among citizens, particularly the youth. Various schools, colleges, cultural institutions, and social organizations will participate in thematic programs to highlight the song’s historical importance.
The ICA Department is expected to launch digital campaigns, exhibitions, and performances featuring local artists to showcase how ‘Vande Mataram’ continues to shape India’s collective consciousness. The events will also emphasize the role of Tripura’s cultural heritage in promoting national integration.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s nationwide commemorative plan, underscoring the shared vision of preserving the nation’s cultural identity and celebrating the milestones of India’s freedom movement.
