CITU Tripura will hold its state conference and a major public rally in Agartala on November 10–11 to highlight workers’ issues, protest anti-labour policies, and strengthen unity against privatization, corruption, and divisive political forces in the state.

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Tripura unit, announced that it will hold its state conference on November 10 and 11, accompanied by a large public rally in Agartala to spotlight the struggles of the working class and protest against what it termed the “anti-labour” policies of the BJP-led government.

At a press conference on Wednesday, CITU state president Manik Dey, general secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta, and leaders Panchali Bhattacharjee and Amitava Dutta outlined the objectives of the upcoming conference. They said the event would focus on strengthening the workers’ movement, addressing economic hardships, and mobilizing collective resistance to the challenges facing labourers in Tripura.

Dutta said CITU has been persistently fighting for the rights and welfare of the working class. “Workers have suffered huge economic setbacks and continuous attacks on their rights. Since 2018, many project and contractual workers have lost their jobs, while construction workers are facing unprecedented difficulties. Such conditions are a direct result of the inefficient and anti-people attitude of the BJP government,” he alleged.

He added that the two-day conference would act as a rallying point for workers to unite in the face of mounting challenges. “The public rally on November 10 will be a historic demonstration of workers’ solidarity in Tripura,” Dutta asserted.

CITU: A Trusted Platform for Workers for 55 Years

Addressing the media, Manik Dey said CITU has been a trusted voice of the working class for over five decades, standing firmly in defense of labour rights and unity. “For 55 years, CITU has consistently championed the cause of the working people. However, communal and divisive forces, led by the RSS, are trying to disrupt this unity,” he said.

Dey revealed that Tripura currently has over 1,08,000 registered CITU members, and more than 400 delegates are expected to attend the state conference. “The event will deliberate on how to strengthen collective struggles, counter divisive politics, and advance the fight for social and economic justice,” he added.

He further accused the ruling party of promoting large-scale privatization and corruption, which he said has endangered the livelihoods of millions. “The wealth of the nation is being handed over to a few corporate families at throwaway prices. This plundering has jeopardized the future of ordinary citizens,” Dey remarked.

Accusations of Obstruction and Bias

CITU leaders also alleged that the state government is actively obstructing trade union activities and denying workers’ organizations their democratic rights. “We are being denied permission to hold legitimate programmes, even though our activities are peaceful and democratic,” Dey claimed.

He said that while corrupt entities manage to accumulate wealth through illicit means, unions like CITU rely solely on small member contributions of Rs 10–15. “Yet, we are unfairly targeted,” he said.

Dey disclosed that CITU had sought permission to organize the rally at Astabal Ground, but the request was rejected. “We have now requested an alternative venue in front of Rabindra Centenary Hall, and we hope the authorities will permit it,” he said.

The public rally will begin at 12 noon on November 10, serving as a prelude to the two-day conference that will discuss major organizational, political, and social strategies to protect workers’ interests and resist corporate exploitation.

A Call for Unity and Resistance

CITU leaders emphasized that the upcoming conference will not just be an internal meeting but a mass mobilisation of workers across Tripura. The event aims to send a strong message of resistance against policies that, they claim, have marginalized the working class and favoured big corporate houses.

“The conference will reiterate our commitment to the ideals of unity, secularism, and social justice,” Dutta concluded. “We will continue to stand by every worker and farmer who faces injustice. The fight for a fair and dignified life will go on.”

As anticipation builds for November 10–11, CITU’s state conference and rally are expected to draw thousands of participants from across Tripura, marking a significant moment in the state’s labour movement and the broader struggle for workers’ rights in India.
