Three patients successfully recovered after advanced endovascular surgeries at Agartala Government Medical College under Ayushman Bharat. The free procedures restored leg circulation, earning praise from Apollo Chennai and showcasing Tripura’s growing medical excellence in vascular treatment.

In a major achievement for public healthcare in Tripura, three patients have made a full recovery following complex endovascular surgeries performed by the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS & IR) at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital. The procedures, conducted entirely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), mark another milestone in advanced vascular care provided by the state-run institution.

The patients — Shanti Ranjan Saha (70) of Shibnagar, Swapan Kumar Das (58) of College Chowmuhani, Jirania, and Madhab Nama (43) of Banikya Chowmuhani — were admitted to the CTVS & IR Department on September 11 and 12, following prior consultations in July and August. Each of them had been suffering from severe arterial blockages caused by prolonged smoking, which led to pain, restricted mobility, and in some cases, the early onset of gangrene in their legs.

After comprehensive medical evaluations, the three patients underwent peripheral vascular angioplasty and stent placement on September 15, effectively restoring normal blood circulation to their lower limbs. The surgeries were carried out using minimally invasive endovascular techniques — a modern approach that allows for smaller incisions, faster recovery, and reduced risk of post-surgical complications compared to traditional open surgeries.

Post-surgery, all three patients showed remarkable improvement. Seventy-year-old Shanti Ranjan Saha visited the hospital on Thursday for a follow-up checkup and received further medical advice from doctors. Similarly, Swapan Kumar Das, who had earlier undergone the procedure at GBP Hospital, was also reported to be recovering well. Notably, medical experts at Apollo Hospital, Chennai, praised the quality of the surgical procedure performed at AGMC, acknowledging it as a commendable achievement for a government medical institution.

The surgeries were led by Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee, CTVS Surgeon, with support from Dr. Rimjhim Chakma (Cardiac Anaesthesiologist), Dr. Manimay Debbarma, and Dr. Surjit Pal (Critical Care). A skilled team of laboratory technicians, nurses, and support staff provided essential assistance throughout the process, ensuring precision and safety during the procedures.

A statement issued by the Tripura Health Department highlighted that all three surgeries were conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) — the flagship national health insurance scheme aimed at providing accessible and affordable treatment for economically disadvantaged citizens. The initiative has enabled patients across Tripura to avail high-quality medical care without financial burden.

The patients and their families expressed deep gratitude to the state government and the medical team for their dedication, expertise, and compassionate service. They commended AGMC and GBP Hospital for bringing advanced surgical procedures within the reach of common people in Tripura.

Endovascular surgery is a rapidly evolving field of medicine that involves using catheters and imaging guidance to treat vascular diseases without the need for open surgery. The success of these recent cases reflects AGMC’s growing capacity to perform complex vascular interventions locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to metropolitan hospitals for specialized treatments.

Medical experts noted that peripheral vascular disease (PVD), often linked to smoking and lifestyle factors, is a growing health concern. Timely diagnosis and intervention are crucial in preventing complications such as gangrene, amputation, or life-threatening infections. The AGMC’s achievement demonstrates how advanced medical technology and skilled professionals can significantly improve patient outcomes even in resource-limited settings.
