BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb condemned the alleged TMC-backed attack on Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh in North Bengal, accusing Mamata Banerjee’s government of promoting political violence and lawlessness as BJP protests erupted across Tripura and West Bengal.

Former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday sharply criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following an alleged attack on BJP leaders Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh in North Bengal. Deb accused TMC-backed miscreants of orchestrating a “planned assault” on the two leaders who were visiting flood-hit areas to help affected families.

In a social media post, Deb expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as another example of political violence and intimidation under the TMC regime. “Both Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh came under a planned attack by TMC-backed goons while they were in the field extending assistance to flood victims in North Bengal,” Deb wrote.

The BJP MP visited the injured leaders at a hospital in Siliguri to enquire about their health and offer his support. Deb said he was disturbed by the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal and warned that such attacks exposed the TMC government’s failure to ensure political freedom and safety for opposition leaders.

“Bengal is witnessing a new dark chapter every day under the TMC regime,” Deb remarked. “Democracy is being strangled daily through state-sponsored violence. Terror, bloodshed, and lawlessness have become the mainstay of Mamata Banerjee’s politics.”

Deb, who was recently appointed co-in-charge of the BJP’s West Bengal election campaign, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of misusing administrative machinery for political gain. “Sensing the approaching end of her regime, Mamata Banerjee has converted governance into party rule, making every institution subservient to her political interests,” he alleged.

He added that the people of Bengal were losing faith in the TMC government’s promises and that widespread disillusionment was growing as violence replaced democratic discourse. “Instead of allowing healthy political competition, the ruling party has chosen intimidation as its primary tool,” Deb said.

The alleged attack on Murmu and Ghosh has triggered widespread protests by BJP workers across Tripura and parts of West Bengal. Party cadres held demonstrations demanding a thorough probe and strict punishment for those responsible. BJP state units accused the West Bengal administration of shielding the perpetrators and turning a blind eye to repeated incidents of political violence.

Senior BJP leaders have also reached out to central authorities, calling for intervention to ensure law and order in the violence-prone districts of North Bengal. They warned that such incidents could further aggravate political tensions ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, local BJP sources claimed that the attack took place when Murmu and Ghosh were distributing relief materials in a flood-hit area, and a group of armed men allegedly affiliated with the TMC ambushed their convoy. Both leaders reportedly sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital in Siliguri.

Although the TMC leadership has not issued an official response to Deb’s allegations, political observers believe that such incidents could intensify the ongoing political battle between the BJP and TMC in the state.

Deb, emphasizing the importance of peaceful politics, appealed to party workers to maintain calm while continuing their protests democratically. “Our struggle is to restore democracy and ensure safety for every citizen in Bengal. Violence cannot silence the voice of truth,” he said.

The former Tripura Chief Minister, known for his vocal stance against political violence, reiterated that the BJP would continue to fight for justice and accountability in the state. “The people of Bengal are tired of living in fear. Change is inevitable, and the time for democratic restoration is near,” he concluded.

The attack on Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh has once again reignited debate over political intolerance and state-backed lawlessness in West Bengal. As the BJP intensifies its campaign ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the incident is expected to become a major talking point in the party’s criticism of the TMC’s governance model.
