India Beat Sri Lanka by 59 Runs in Rain-Hit Women’s World Cup Opener

India thrashed Sri Lanka by 59 runs in a rain-affected opening match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Guwahati. Chasing India’s revised DLS target of 271 runs, Sri Lanka made 211 runs in 45.4 overs. Earlier, batting first, India scored 269 runs for 8 in 47 overs. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first. From the Indian side, Amanjot Kaur was the top scorer with 57 runs. Sri Lankan bowler Inoka Ranaweera took four wickets. The match was interrupted by rain, leading to a reduction in overs to 47.
 
 
Following a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method adjustment, India’s final score was set at 270, setting Sri Lanka a revised target of 271 to win. India’s  Deepti Sharma was declared player of the match. The Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, is looking to end a 47-year wait for the Indian women’s cricket team for their maiden ICC title.  
 
 
The 2025 Women’s World Cup is the 13th edition of the 50-over cricket tournament featuring 8 teams – India, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Bangladesh and Pakistan. These teams will compete in 28 league matches in a round-robin format across four venues in India and one in Colombo. The much-anticipated match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan will be played on Sunday in Colombo.
