Tripura recorded a 64.07% rise in domestic tourism and a 36.15% increase in foreign visitors in 2024, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced. The state secured the second spot in Northeast tourism, with central support promised for infrastructure growth.

Tripura has emerged as a rising destination in India’s tourism map, recording impressive growth in both domestic and foreign tourist arrivals in 2024. State Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Sunday announced that the state witnessed a remarkable 64.07 per cent surge in domestic tourism, alongside a 36.15 per cent rise in foreign tourist visits, reinforcing its position as one of the leading destinations in the Northeast.

Sharp Rise in Domestic and Foreign Tourist Numbers

According to official data shared by the Minister, domestic tourist arrivals increased from 0.366 million in 2023 to 0.601 million in 2024. Similarly, foreign tourist arrivals grew from 0.067 million in 2023 to 0.091 million in 2024. This growth has placed Tripura in the second position in the Northeast in terms of foreign tourist visits, behind only Sikkim.

Chowdhury expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Manik Saha, the people of Tripura, and the Tourism Department for contributing to what he termed a “remarkable success.” He emphasized that the growth reflects the state’s increasing appeal as a travel destination, fueled by government initiatives, cultural richness, and natural beauty.

Support from Central Ministers

The Minister also highlighted recent interactions with Union Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He noted that both leaders assured all possible assistance for the development of tourism infrastructure in Tripura.

During his meeting with Scindia in Delhi, Chowdhury presented details of the state’s ongoing projects and requested funds to improve tourism infrastructure. “The DoNER Minister assured all possible help to strengthen the tourism sector in the state,” he said in a social media post.

Similarly, in his meeting with Finance Minister Sitharaman, Chowdhury sought financial support for new tourism projects. “The Union Finance Minister assured all possible cooperation for the development of tourism in Tripura,” he wrote. Both meetings were also attended by Tourism Department Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma and Director Prashant Badal Negi.

Tripura’s Tourism Potential

Tripura’s growing popularity comes from a blend of cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and developmental initiatives. The state is home to several attractions including the UNESCO-recognized Neermahal, Ujjayanta Palace, Tripurasundari Temple, and diverse wildlife sanctuaries. Efforts to improve connectivity, hospitality facilities, and eco-tourism opportunities have also contributed to making the state more appealing to travelers.

The government has been prioritizing sustainable tourism, aiming not only to increase tourist inflows but also to ensure community participation and economic benefits for local people.

A Boost for the State Economy

Tourism is increasingly seen as a vital pillar of Tripura’s economy. With rising tourist arrivals, the sector is expected to generate greater employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and improve the state’s global visibility.

Minister Chowdhury reiterated that the government is committed to building modern infrastructure, promoting cultural festivals, and marketing Tripura’s unique attractions at the national and international levels. “With the support of the Centre and the determination of the people, Tripura will become a key tourism hub in the Northeast,” he said.

As Tripura maintains its upward trajectory, the latest tourism data reflects the state’s strong potential to emerge as a major player in India’s tourism landscape.
