Chief Minister of Tripura Dr. Manik Saha today inaugurated the North Eastern Zone Badminton Championship, organized by the Tripura Badminton Association, with over 200 players from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Sikkim participating in the four-day event.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Saha said the inclusion of Sikkim in the zone has expanded the region’s sporting fraternity beyond the traditional seven states. “This championship reflects the unity in diversity of the North East and provides a platform for our youth to showcase their talent at the national and international level,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister underlined the importance of sports in shaping character, instilling discipline, and promoting national unity. “Sports not only develop the human body and mind but also nurture patriotism and responsibility among children. The North East is already known as a cradle of talent in boxing, football, and athletics. We want to see similar excellence in badminton,” he said.
Highlighting the state’s progress in sports infrastructure, Dr. Saha noted that Tripura has constructed eight synthetic turfs, two synthetic athletic tracks, and two indoor sports halls in recent years. Floodlights have also been installed at Agartala’s Avananta football ground, making night games possible.
Outlining future plans, the Chief Minister announced the construction of two multi-purpose indoor sports halls at Kailasahar and Udaipur, a 200-bed sports hostel at Badharghat, and 50 open gymnasiums across the state. “We are also working to develop an international-standard sports complex at Bulagari Vista with a swimming pool, football field, and gallery facilities,” he added.
Congratulating the players, Dr. Saha urged them to play with integrity and sportsmanship. “This championship is not just a competition, but a celebration of talent and unity. I encourage all participants to give their best, respect their fellow players, and also take time to explore Tripura’s beautiful tourist destinations,” he concluded.
