For the first time in any academic year, the total number of teachers in the country has crossed the one crore mark in the academic year 2024-25. This was revealed in a report by Ministry of Education on Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE +) on school education in India. According to the report, this is a rise of 6.7 percent compared to 2022-23 in the same period. Meanwhile, India currently has almost 15 lakh schools with over 24 crore students. Amongst these, almost 50 percent students are enrolled in government schools, followed by 41 percent in private schools and the rest in government aided schools. Furthermore, female representation has also increased with over 54.3 percent school teachers being female and girls’ enrolment currently at 48.3 percent.
The Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) has also improved during the academic year 2024-25. The PTR at the Foundational, Preparatory, Middle, and Secondary levels are now reported as 10, 13, 17, and 21 respectively. Dropout rates, Student Retention rates and Gross Enrolment Ratio have bettered as well. The government has also clamped down on Zero Enrolment and Single Teacher Schools along with an overall uptick in school infrastructure.
The Ministry highlighted that this increase in teacher numbers is a critical step toward improving student-teacher ratios, ensuring quality education, and addressing regional disparities in teacher availability.  It added that schools are becoming more supportive and responsive to students’ needs, helping to reduce early departures of students and ensuring broader educational inclusion
