The Sepahijala District Congress gheraoed the Bishalgarh SDPO office after a brutal attack on teacher Rajesh Sur Chowdhury. Leaders accused the government of law and order failure, citing multiple assaults, including on journalists. With Durga Puja nearing, Congress demands swift justice and stronger security measures across Tripura.

Tensions escalated in Bishalgarh on Tuesday afternoon as the Sepahijala District Congress staged a massive protest outside the office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO). The gherao was organized in response to a brutal attack on a respected local teacher, an incident that has sparked outrage, fear, and anger across the community.

According to reports, the incident took place on Monday night when Rajesh Sur Chowdhury, a well-known educator at Bishalgarh Higher Secondary School, was violently assaulted near Bishalgarh Hospital. Eyewitnesses and locals allege that a group of anti-social elements carried out the attack, leaving the teacher seriously injured. The shocking incident has raised fresh concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in the region.

Congress Leads Protest Against Police Inaction

On Tuesday, senior Congress leaders and hundreds of supporters marched to the SDPO’s office, demanding immediate justice and strict punishment for the perpetrators. They also submitted a deputation to the police administration, urging swift intervention and stronger measures to curb criminal activities.

Speaking to the media, Congress leaders expressed frustration with what they described as the “complete collapse” of law and order in Bishalgarh. “The people of this region are living in fear. If teachers, journalists, and common citizens can be attacked so openly, it shows that anti-social forces are operating with impunity,” one leader said.

The Congress delegation accused both the state government and local police of ignoring the growing threat of lawlessness. They alleged that influential political figures and law enforcement officials are deliberately remaining silent despite being aware of the involvement of miscreants in violent activities.

Series of Attacks Spark Fear in Bishalgarh

Party leaders emphasized that the assault on teacher Rajesh Sur Chowdhury was not an isolated incident. They cited another recent case in the Sarkar Tilla area near Bishalgarh Bypass, where miscreants allegedly targeted the residence of a local resident, Shyam Das.

Moreover, Congress leaders highlighted that even members of the press have been subjected to violence. Journalists covering the developments at Bishalgarh Hospital on Monday night were allegedly harassed and physically attacked by anti-social elements, further raising concerns about freedom of the press and safety of professionals in the region.

Demand for Immediate Government Action

With the state’s most significant festival, Durga Puja, just around the corner, Congress leaders warned that the prevailing atmosphere of insecurity could cast a shadow on public celebrations. They urged the government and police to act decisively to restore confidence among the people.

“The upcoming festive season must not be marred by fear and violence. We demand that the government ensures the safety of citizens, teachers, journalists, and families who wish to celebrate in peace,” a senior Congress member told reporters.

Public Anger Rising Over Law and Order

Residents of Bishalgarh echoed similar concerns, pointing out that unchecked criminal activities have created an environment of constant anxiety. Several locals who joined the protest said they are losing faith in the administration’s ability to safeguard ordinary citizens.

Political analysts believe that such incidents may intensify public dissatisfaction with the government and further fuel the ongoing debates about security and governance in Tripura. For the Congress, the protest marks another opportunity to challenge the ruling government’s credibility on maintaining law and order.

The Road Ahead

As investigations into the teacher’s assault continue, the Congress has vowed to maintain pressure on the police administration until justice is served. They warned that if the authorities fail to take immediate and visible action, the party will escalate its protests to state-wide demonstrations.

The attack on Rajesh Sur Chowdhury has become a rallying point for opposition forces and ordinary citizens alike. It has not only highlighted the vulnerabilities in the security apparatus but has also underscored the growing demand for accountability from those in power.

For Bishalgarh, the coming days will be crucial. The people are looking to the government and police to prove that law and order can indeed prevail — especially with Durga Puja fast approaching. Failure to do so could deepen public anger and erode trust further in the institutions meant to protect them.
