The Left Front in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, staged a massive protest after attacks on CITU leaders and an ASHA worker, condemning rising crime, voter rights violations, and administrative inaction. Leaders demanded urgent law-and-order restoration and warned of intensified movements if justice and safety are not ensured.

The Left Front committee in Dharmanagar staged a strong protest on Friday in response to a series of violent incidents that have shaken the region. Public outrage intensified after the houses of CITU leaders Nikhil Kar and Shibabrata Chakraborty were attacked by unidentified miscreants, and a widowed ASHA worker, Jayanti Biswas, was brutally assaulted.

These incidents have sparked deep anger among Left leaders and local residents, who say the attacks are symptomatic of a growing breakdown in law and order in the town and surrounding areas.

Protest Against Violence and Administrative Negligence

The protest was not limited to condemning the physical assaults. The Left Front highlighted several other pressing issues, including:

  • The alarming deterioration of law and order in Dharmanagar.

  • Allegations of deprivation of voting rights under the guise of voter list revisions.

  • A lack of public safety due to unchecked criminal activities.

The demonstration began in the heart of Dharmanagar, where Left supporters gathered in large numbers before marching through the streets. Many locals joined spontaneously, reflecting the widespread public discontent.

Demands for Justice and Accountability

A Left delegation later visited Dharmanagar Police Station to meet the Officer-in-Charge. The leaders demanded an impartial and time-bound investigation into the attacks, the immediate arrest of the accused, and their prosecution under the law.

Speaking to the press, CPI(M) leader Amitabh Datta, North District Secretary Abhijit Dey, Dharmanagar Subdivision Secretary Ratan Roy, former minister Bijita Nath, and other leaders criticized what they described as the administration’s “indifference” toward rising crime.

“The snatching away of people’s voting rights will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the leaders warned. “If the criminal rampage is not stopped and the administration fails to maintain law and order, the people will respond through massive movements.”

Public Anger on the Rise

The large turnout reflected growing frustration among residents over both the violence and what they view as the government’s failure to address their concerns. Protesters carried placards demanding justice for the victims and chanted slogans against administrative inaction.

Locals say the incidents targeting political leaders and vulnerable citizens, such as the attack on the widowed ASHA worker, have created an atmosphere of fear. The Left leaders stressed that unless urgent steps are taken, the situation could escalate further.

Call for Administrative Action

The protest ended with a renewed call for the state administration to:

  1. Restore public safety in Dharmanagar.

  2. Ensure fair and transparent voter list revisions.

  3. Take decisive action against criminal elements.

The leaders also hinted at intensifying their agitation if their demands are ignored, signaling that the issue could develop into a larger political flashpoint in North Tripura.

For now, the Left Front’s protest has amplified the voices of those who feel neglected, with residents waiting to see whether authorities will act swiftly—or risk facing larger mass movements in the days ahead.
