Agartala, Nov 30: Agartala unit of Tipra Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF), the student wing of TIPRA Motha, on Wednesday held a mass rally at the capital city and submitted a deputation to the Director of Education Department, in support of the demand to use Roman script for Kokborok language instead of Bengali script in all examinations.

Mevar Kumar Jamatia, the former tribal welfare minister of the state led the mass rally commenced from Umakanta School ground in the morning.

Talking to reporters, Jamatia who resigned from the state assembly on November 8 and left the BJP-led state government’s ally IPFT and joined the Tipra Motha party said the issue of the script for the Kokborok language is very sensitive and should be handled carefully. .

He said, although Kokborok is the official language of the state, some may not know the importance of this language.

“Even the Bhasha (Language) Commission which was formed during the Left-Front regime, recommended Roman script for the Kokborok language, but, I don’t know why the ruling BJP-led state government is lingering the matter,” he said.

The Jamatia said that Tipra Motha especially TISF, the party’s student wing, has launched a vigorous agitation across the state against the state government’s decision.

“Today’s mass rally is a part of state-wide protest against the decision,” he added.

Jamatia expressed hope that the central and state government would soon address the issue carefully.
