Fresh violence erupted in Jampuijala as TIPRA Motha supporters allegedly attacked BJP workers during a market meeting. The incident has deepened the crisis within the ruling alliance, raising questions about its stability in Tripura’s tribal regions ahead of crucial elections. Tensions between both parties continue to escalate.

The alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its tribal partner TIPRA Motha is once again under intense strain following a fresh incident of violence in Jampuijala. On Thursday, a BJP-organized “bazaar sabha” (market meeting) turned chaotic after alleged TIPRA Motha supporters disrupted the gathering and physically assaulted BJP workers, causing multiple injuries.

The incident occurred during a scheduled political meeting that saw the presence of BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma and local Mandal president Nirmal Debbarma. According to eyewitness accounts and statements from BJP leaders, a group of TIPRA Motha supporters stormed the venue, shouted slogans, and engaged in physical altercations with BJP attendees.

This latest act of aggression comes close on the heels of the violent Asharambari incident, where BJP workers were similarly targeted. The back-to-back episodes of violence are intensifying perceptions of a widening rift within the ruling alliance, casting a shadow on the fragile coalition between the BJP and TIPRA Motha, especially in Tripura’s tribal heartlands.

Local BJP leaders condemned the incident in strong terms, accusing TIPRA Motha of double-dealing — participating in government while simultaneously orchestrating grassroots disruptions. “How can an ally be trusted when its cadre continues to physically harm our workers?” asked one senior BJP functionary from the Janajati Morcha, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Several injured BJP workers were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment. While the exact number of injured remains unconfirmed, sources indicate that the violence has left a lasting impact on local morale, and tensions are now at a boiling point in the area.

Political observers have begun questioning the sustainability of the BJP-TIPRA Motha coalition, especially in the lead-up to forthcoming elections. The tribal belt, which has historically been a politically sensitive zone, is now witnessing an erosion of mutual trust. “These repeated clashes highlight the inherently contradictory nature of the alliance — one side governs while the other agitates,” remarked a Tripura-based political analyst.

Within the BJP, there is growing frustration, especially among tribal leaders who have struggled to maintain relevance in the face of TIPRA Motha’s assertive mobilization. The Janajati Morcha, which represents the tribal wing of the BJP, is reportedly demanding a tougher stance from the party’s central leadership and may push for a policy rethink on continuing the alliance.

The violence also adds to an emerging political narrative that TIPRA Motha is positioning itself for greater autonomy, even at the cost of breaching alliance discipline. While TIPRA Motha has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the Jampuijala incident, sources within the party suggest it may downplay the violence as “local-level skirmishes,” a claim the BJP finds hard to digest.

In the aftermath of Thursday’s attack, the BJP is expected to raise the matter with top state government officials, possibly even demanding an internal review or formal censure against the TIPRA Motha leadership. Meanwhile, grassroots workers remain on edge, with security around upcoming BJP events being reassessed.

As the uneasy partnership teeters on the edge, many believe the political cost of maintaining this alliance may soon outweigh the benefits, particularly if such flashpoints continue to spiral out of control. With critical elections on the horizon, both parties must now confront a hard truth — unity in name alone will not be enough to face a restless electorate.
