Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the joint session of Parliament of Trinidad & Tobago. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Modi said, the voice of the developing world remains on the margins and India will work with its partners to give the Global South its rightful seat at the high table. He said India brought the concerns of the Global South to the centre of global decision-making during its presidency of the G20.
Calling for reform in global governance, the Prime Minister said that the old institutions are struggling to deliver peace and progress while at the same time, the Global South is rising.
He said, they wish to see a new and fairer world order. He also called upon the global community to strengthen the fight against terrorism, which poses a grave threat to a peace-loving society.
Mr Modi described democracy as more than just a political system for India, calling it a way of life. Mr Modi hailed democracy as a shared value and praised the nation’s women leaders of Indian origin.
Mr. Modi was delivering the speech from the iconic Red House, the historic seat of Trinidad and Tobago’s Parliament, rich with symbolism and historical references. Prime Minister Modi called both countries pillars of strength, united by their post-colonial journeys and commitment to democratic ideals.

The 2nd day of PM’s visit saw 6 MoUs and the historic address to the Joint Session of the Parliament by the Prime Minister. He emphasised India’s commitment to uplifting the Global South. He mentioned democracy as more than a system but “a way of life,” praising Trinidad and Tobago’s Red House as a symbol of resilience.
Thereafter, the leaders of the two nations exchanged 6 MoUs focusing on the areas of diplomatic training, sports, setting up of ICCR, cultural exchanges, and accessible pharma. Also it was announced that India will be providing 2000 laptops to students in Trinidad and Tobago.
Earlier in the day PM was conferred with the highest national award of the country, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
With yesterday’s deceleration on OCI extension and celebration of the Indian diaspora, this visit has seen comprehensive success. From cultural to economic, capacity building, health and collaboration on a wide range of aspects have truly made this visit a huge success and a milestone in cooperative relations between Trinidad and Tobago and India.
