The Agartala Press Club felicitated 16 students—children of working journalists—for excelling in Madhyamik and HS exams. The event, a first of its kind, featured awards, speeches, and lunch, with dignitaries urging students to value education, environment, and family care. The initiative will now be held annually.
The Agartala Press Club hosted a felicitation ceremony on Monday to honour the children of working journalists and photojournalists who successfully passed this year’s Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations. Held at the club’s auditorium, the event highlighted the club’s commitment to recognising and nurturing the educational accomplishments of the next generation.
A total of 16 meritorious students were honoured during the event, which was attended by proud parents, respected journalists, and senior members of the press fraternity. The atmosphere was one of pride, encouragement, and community spirit, reflecting the bond that the journalistic community shares not just professionally, but personally as well.
A Community Comes Together
The ceremony was graced by prominent figures in the media industry, including senior editor Subal Kumar Dey, and veteran journalists Shekhar Dutta and Jayanta Bhattacharya. The Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar and Vice-President Chitra Roy were also present to support the initiative.
Awards were distributed by Press Club Secretary Ramakanta Dey, Joint Secretaries Kamal Choudhury and Abhishek Dey, Treasurer Ranjan Roy, and executive committee members Abhishek Debbarma, Mihir Sarkar, Santosh Gope, and Biswajit Dey. Senior members Alok Ghosh and Surajit Pal also participated in the honours, presenting awards and sharing words of encouragement.
In his welcome address, Secretary Ramakanta Dey emphasized the importance of such initiatives in fostering a sense of achievement and purpose among the youth. He stated, “This is more than a celebration. It is a recognition of hard work and a step towards motivating these bright young minds to continue striving for excellence.”
Celebrating Success and Responsibility
Each honoured student received a memento, a sapling, and a cash prize, symbolising not only academic success but also the hope for a sustainable and responsible future. The sapling served as a reminder of the importance of nurturing growth, both intellectually and environmentally.
During their speeches, dignitaries urged students to remain focused on their goals and to uphold the values taught at home. In a moving appeal, they encouraged the younger generation to take responsibility for the well-being of their parents in their later years, saying that no parent should be left alone or sent to an old-age home.
A New Tradition Begins
The event marked a significant milestone for the Agartala Press Club, as it was the first time such a felicitation ceremony had been organized specifically for the children of working journalists. With unanimous appreciation from attendees and the press community alike, the club’s executive committee assured that this initiative would now become an annual tradition.

This initiative has not only uplifted the spirits of the students and their families but also brought attention to the role of journalists as parents, highlighting the balance between professional duty and family life. The Agartala Press Club’s commitment to supporting journalists beyond the newsroom sets a precedent that other press organisations may well consider following.
