Operation Sindhu brings back 290 Indians, including 190 from Jammu and Kashmir, from war-hit Iran amid rising Iran-Israel tensions. Evacuees thanked the Indian government for their safe return. More evacuations, including from Israel, are expected soon as India ramps up diplomatic efforts to ensure citizens’ safety abroad.
As tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, the Indian government has launched “Operation Sindhu” to ensure the safe return of its citizens from conflict-affected areas. The third evacuation flight under this mission successfully landed in Delhi from Iran, carrying nearly 290 Indian nationals — including 190 students from Jammu and Kashmir. Their arrival was met with patriotic chants, emotional reunions, and deep gratitude towards the Indian authorities.
The returning passengers, many of whom had been stranded in war-hit regions of Iran, expressed overwhelming relief upon landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Clutching Indian flags, they raised slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” a moving display of their appreciation for being brought home safely amidst the rapidly deteriorating situation in Iran due to ongoing hostilities with Israel.
Emotional Homecoming
Among the evacuees was Alia Batul, who spoke to IANS, saying, “We knew the Indian government was with us. They made sure we returned safely to our homeland.” Another returnee, Shabnam Zehra, who had been stuck in the Iranian city of Mashhad, also expressed similar sentiments: “Only because of the Indian government we have returned safely. We were scared, but help came quickly.”
Visibly moved by the experience, Maulana Sayeed applauded the efforts of the Indian Embassy in Tehran and India’s ambassador. “Things were not good in Iran. But the embassy in Tehran, our ambassador cooperated fully. We are short of words to thank them,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion.
Government’s Coordinated Efforts
Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (CPV & OIA) in the Ministry of External Affairs, was present at the airport to welcome the evacuees. He informed the media, “Today, the third flight under Operation Sindhu arrived from Iran with nearly 290 Indians. Amongst them, 190 were from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with others from Haryana, Delhi, and West Bengal. Their smiles are the biggest prize for us.”
Chatterjee acknowledged the critical role played by international cooperation in making the evacuation a success. “We thank the Iranian government for opening its airspace and also appreciate the cooperation of Armenia and Turkmenistan in facilitating the safe passage of Indians. The safety, security, and welfare of Indian nationals abroad is our top priority,” he emphasized.
Notably, all evacuees were temporarily housed in five-star hotels, with many praising the high standard of care and hospitality provided. These arrangements were part of the government’s efforts to ensure comfort and dignity for those returning from high-stress environments.
More Evacuations Underway
The Indian government is not resting after this successful round of evacuations. Chatterjee confirmed that further evacuations from Iran are being planned as the situation remains volatile. “Preparations are underway to evacuate more Indians still stranded in Iran,” he said.

In addition, the government is now actively engaging with Israeli authorities to begin the repatriation of Indian citizens from Israel, where tensions are also high due to the ongoing conflict. “Talks are ongoing with Israeli authorities. Very soon, flights will be arranged to bring our people back from Israel too,” Chatterjee assured.
A Model of Diplomacy and Emergency Response
Operation Sindhu stands as a shining example of India’s proactive diplomacy and commitment to the welfare of its citizens. From swift coordination with multiple governments to providing dignified post-arrival care, the operation showcases India’s capabilities in crisis response.
For the families of the returnees and for the evacuees themselves, Operation Sindhu is more than just a logistical mission — it is a lifeline extended by their nation when they needed it the most.
