The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in Puducherry has taken a significant step forward in disaster preparedness with the installation of the BHISHM Cube, a mobile emergency medical unit. The BHISHM Cube, short for Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita, and Maitri, is part of the Arogya Maitri Project under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The mobile unit is designed to provide swift, advanced medical care during both natural and man-made disasters. Each compact cube, weighing under 20 kilograms, carries vital life-saving tools such as defibrillators, portable ultrasound devices, infusion pumps, surgical stations, and advanced triage systems. The cubes can be transported easily, even via drones, boats, or vehicles, and can operate in remote or disaster-hit areas with minimal infrastructure.
