Newly elected members of Rajya Sabha take oath

As many as 27 newly elected members of the Rajya Sabha today took oath this morning. They include Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal along with other prominent leaders Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, Jayant Chaudhary, Surendra Singh Nagar, Dr. K. Laxman, and Dr. Laxmikant Vajpayee. They took oath in presence of the Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu in the Chamber of Upper House. A total of 57 members were elected to the Rajya Sabha during the recent biennial polls.  

Addressing the Members who took oath in the house, Mr Naidu informed us that the ensuing Monsoon Session of the house will also be held as per the COVID-19 protocol conforming with the social distancing and safety norms. He urged the Members to uphold the dignity and decorum of the house through meaningful deliberations and abiding by the rules and conventions. Mr Naidu advised them to make proper use of the ample opportunities that will be available under various instruments and to attend the house regularly during the sessions.    
 
The Chairman also clarified that those elected members who are still to take oath also can vote in the Presidential Election on the 18th of this month. He further elaborated that from the date of the notification of the winners in the elections to Rajya Sabha, they are deemed to be Members of the house.
