Prof (Dr) Upasana Mahanta of JGU becomes the first Indian academic appointed to Cambridge International’s SHEAC, marking a historic moment for India’s global education leadership. Her inclusion brings vital Global South representation to the council shaping the future of Cambridge qualifications and international higher education.
Professor (Dr) Upasana Mahanta, Dean of Admissions and Outreach at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), has been appointed as the first Indian member of the Strategic Higher Education Advisory Council (SHEAC) of Cambridge International. This appointment marks a milestone moment for Indian representation on a prestigious global educational platform.
SHEAC is composed of senior leaders from some of the world’s most respected academic institutions, including Oxford, MIT, Cambridge, Toronto, and Monash. The Council plays a critical role in shaping global perspectives on the relevance, recognition, and future direction of Cambridge qualifications. For the first time, India will have a voice in this influential group, reflecting the increasing global stature of Indian higher education.
Prof Mahanta’s appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a recognition of India’s emerging leadership in global academic discourse. Her inclusion brings a much-needed perspective from the Global South, offering insights that reflect the diverse aspirations of students and educators in rapidly developing regions. Her contribution is expected to strengthen India’s role in shaping global education policies and practices.
Speaking on her new role, Prof Mahanta said, “It’s an incredible honour to join this global group of educators and policy leaders. I see this as an opportunity to represent not just JGU but also the aspirations of students and educators across India and the Global South. The world of education is transforming, and it’s vital that this transformation is guided by voices that are diverse, grounded, and globally minded.”
Prof (Dr) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of JGU, expressed pride at the development. “This is a proud moment for JGU and for India. Prof Upasana Mahanta’s appointment shows that the work we are doing here—our values, our vision, our commitment to inclusive education—resonates globally,” he said.
As education systems globally are being reshaped by rapid technological advancements, global migration, climate concerns, and shifting definitions of learning, this representation takes on even greater significance. Prof Mahanta’s role in SHEAC offers an opportunity for India to contribute more actively and visibly to global educational reforms and innovation.
