Two children, Prasenjit and Priyanka Debnath, tragically drowned in a waterlogged construction pit in Tripura’s Purba Chandmari area. The incident has sparked outrage over alleged negligence by the construction firm.

A tragic incident unfolded in the Purba Chandmari area of West Tripura as two minor siblings, Prasenjit Debnath (11) and his sister Priyanka Debnath (7), drowned in a water-filled pit near a school. The siblings had gone missing on Saturday afternoon while playing near their home, and their lifeless bodies were discovered the next day.

According to police reports, the children, residents of the Purba Chandmari locality, had left their home around noon to play in the vicinity but never returned. Their parents, Krishna Debnath and his wife, began searching frantically and alerted the police when their initial search yielded no results.

“There was no trace of the children throughout Saturday evening and night,” said a local police official. “On Sunday afternoon, two workers involved in a nearby building construction noticed two bodies floating in a shallow pit dug for installing a water pump. They immediately informed the authorities.”

Police personnel, along with members of the Fire and Emergency Services, rushed to the site and recovered the bodies. The pit, reportedly left uncovered and waterlogged, was found near the construction site adjacent to a local school.

The incident has sparked a wave of anger and grief in the local community. Many residents have alleged gross negligence on the part of the construction company responsible for the site. Locals claim the pit had been left open without any safety barriers or warnings, creating a deadly trap for unsuspecting children.

Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured the family of government support. In a post on social media platform X, he stated:

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Krishna Debnath’s son Prosenjit Debnath (11) and daughter Priyanka Debnath (7) in an unexpected incident in Chandmari area of East Agartala. May Almighty God grant the bereaved family the strength to bear the pain of loss. We will do our best to stand by the family in this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, public demand for accountability is growing louder, with calls for a thorough investigation into the role of the construction firm and whether proper safety measures were followed.

The tragic loss of two innocent lives has cast a somber shadow over the Purba Chandmari locality, as residents mourn and seek justice for the Debnath family.
