Not many are aware of the fact the Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee had once helped Maharaja of Tripura Bir Bikram Manikya to effectively nip in the bud a conspiracy that was being hatched to get Tripura included in Pakistan after the Partition. That was the time when one royal family members and some of his coterie were active in hatching the conspiracy and the matter became known to Dr Mookerjee who was then pioneering figure.
Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma who is also a Tripura Royal family member in a programme to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Mookerjee said when the conspiracy was known he in a smart move made Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur president of a Hindu Maha Sabha president and the message was loud and clear. There are several documents relating to this, said Dev Varma.
Later Maharaja Bir Bikram made his instruction explicit with any ambiguity that when India would be independent Royal Tripura would join the Indian Union. Tripura so did in 1949.
“Besides, it was also Tripura Maharaja who constructed the first Hindu temple in London”, Varma said.
Tripura along with rest of the country observed the birth anniversary of the founder of Jana Sangh – Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in a befitting manner.
The Dy. Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma accompanied by the state Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, among others paid a floral tribute to the portrait of Shyama Prasad here at Agartala Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan on Wednesday.
The ICA Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was a patriotic and political figure and his self-sacrifice will be remembered in the history of our country. He sacrificed himself to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the country, he said.
“The country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is moving in direction with the path laid down by Shyama Prasad. Shyama Prasad was the first to call for the repeal of Article 370 in Kashmir,” Chowdhury said.
In his inaugural speech Jishnu Dev Varma said, Dr. Shyama Prasad was the first to call for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ for the development of every individual in the country.
“Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee dreamt India to remain integral and gave top priority to the integrity and sovereignty of the country,” Dev Varma said, adding that Dr Mukherjee had fought to build a united India. He also tried to ensure that all the people of the country get justice and also thought of the country above all else, he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the meaning of the new India lies in the dreams and thoughts of the students studying in schools, colleges and universities. “Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said this in a message. And this is real. Those who learn nothing from history remain deprived,” he said.
