In a significant victory against the drug menace, security personnel in separate incidents on Thursday destroyed drugs valued at over Rs 160 crores in Assam and Tripura. The operations underscore the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related crimes and safeguard the communities.

Major Drug Bust in Assam

An Assam Police spokesperson reported that the Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj) Police successfully destroyed drugs worth Rs 156.84 crores in the Sharif Nagar area. The confiscated substances had been seized over several months from various parts of the district.

The drug destruction event was attended by prominent officials including Deputy Inspector General of South Range Kanakjyoti Saikia, Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, and the District Commissioner. Both DIG Saikia and SP Das lauded the efforts of the Sribhumi Police, emphasizing the significant impact of recent operations which have led to the apprehension and incarceration of 196 drug traffickers.

The destroyed contraband included:

  • Heroin: 14 kg

  • Yaba Tablets: 15 lakh

  • Cannabis: 6.15 crore kg

  • Phensedyl Cough Syrup: 2.83 lakh bottles

  • Other intoxicating capsules and tablets: 51,000 units

District police chief Das, known for his proactive stance against drug trafficking, has spearheaded operations leading to the destruction of banned substances worth approximately Rs 222 crores since he took charge in late 2022.

Large-Scale Operation in Tripura

In Tripura, a coordinated effort by Assam Rifles, state police, and forest officials resulted in the destruction of 90,000 cannabis plants spread over 110 acres in the Kathalia area of Sepahijala district. The haul was valued at Rs 3.5 crores.

A defence spokesperson highlighted the significance of this large-scale crackdown, noting the crucial role of local administration in the mission’s success. “This operation marks a critical step towards fostering a drug-free environment and safeguarding the community’s future,” he said.

Additional Seizures in Mizoram

In another noteworthy operation, Assam Rifles recovered foreign cigarettes worth Rs 26 lakhs in Mizoram’s Champhai district, near the border. The entire consignment, contained in 20 cartons, has been handed over to the Customs Preventive Force, Champhai, for further legal proceedings.

These concerted actions by security personnel across the northeast reflect a robust and collaborative approach towards eradicating the scourge of drugs and ensuring the safety and well-being of the region’s inhabitants.
