Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Sushanta Chowdhury Saturday said the state government so far achieved 50.32 percent coverage of rural households under Jal Jeevan Mission.

Chowdhury said, there are 7,60,052 rural households in Tripura and total 3,82,475 households have already been provided Functional Tap Water Connections (FHTCs).

“Our government has so far provided 3,57,973 water connections. Before the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission, only 24,502 rural households had tap water connections. The achievement so far is 50.32 percent, which is higher than the national average,” Chowdhury said while speaking to the media on the achievements.

He said, Tripura is holding 16th position in the country and 5th position in the North East in terms of implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission.

“Of the total 8723 para (locality), 100 percent coverage has already been ensured in 1476 para. 75 to 100 percent success has been achieved in 1185 para, 50 to 75 percent success rate recorded in 1547 para and 0 to 50 percent achievement in 2762. Besides, works have already started in another 1457 paras while the process is yet to start in 296 para,” Chowdhury said.

Giving more details, he said, 3407 among 4536 schools and 4735 among 8932 Anganwadi centres have already been given water connections— so far the success rate is 75.11 percent and 53.01 percent respectively.

The DWS minister also said, every household would have access to drinking water facilities in the next one year since the department and officials concerned are working on a mission mode and there is no shortage of funds.

He said, one Deep Tube Well (DTW) covers around 150 houses– at present, 2220 DTWs are available in the state and a plan is in the pipeline to install more 1200 DTWs. Besides, Tripura government also planned to set up around 1300 Iron Removal Plants and the process would commence within the next few days.

Secretary, PWD- Kiran Gitte and Chief Engineer (DWS) Rajib Debbarma were also present in the press conference held at the civil secretariat.
