In the past 60 hours, relentless rainfall in North Sikkim has caused significant havoc, with the surging water levels of the Teesta River leading to the collapse of both an old suspension bridge and a newly constructed Bailey bridge at Sanklang. This has stranded approximately 2,000 tourists, cutting off the crucial connection to the Dzongu region of North Sikkim.

District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri held a meeting yesterday to assess the damage from the rains, which have caused six fatalities—three in Pakeshep and three in Ambithang—with injuries in both Ambithang and Kabi. Reports are also coming from Namchi and Gangtok districts that, due to heavy rainfall, various rural roads have been swept away.
