Heavy downpours on Wednesday night led to a devastating landslide in Deoracherra ADC village, Gaurnagar block of Kailashahar. The landslide severely damaged the home of Ganesh Tanti, causing significant injuries and widespread destruction.

The incident occurred around midnight when relentless rain triggered a landslide that struck the Tanti family’s dwelling in Bhuipara, Ward No. 4 of Deoracherra ADC Village. Ganesh Tanti, a daily wage earner, was asleep in his house along with his wife, Meera Tanti, and their son. As the house collapsed under the pressure of the landslide, a portion of the wall fell on Ganesh Tanti, leaving him severely injured, while his wife and son narrowly escaped harm.

Alarmed by the incident, neighbors rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the family. On Thursday morning, reporters found Ganesh Tanti lying on the veranda of his neighbor’s house, visibly distressed and pleading for assistance. He explained that due to financial difficulties, he was unable to afford medical treatment at a hospital, leaving his family in a precarious situation.

Ganesh Tanti revealed that after receiving funds from the Panchayat under the PM Awas Yojana scheme to build his house, he had repaid some of the money to panchayat members for constructing the house. However, out of the total received fund of Rs 1,30,000, only Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 was reportedly spent on the construction. It was alleged that the low-quality construction work was a significant factor in the house’s collapse.

In addition to the Tanti family, another nearby house belonging to Dipen Tanti also sustained partial damage due to the landslide. Dipen’s wife, Ashtami Tanti, mentioned that they too had received funds under the PM Awas Yojana to build their house.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Pradip Sarkar, the SDM of Kailashahar subdivision, promptly visited the affected area and assured the residents that he would investigate the matter.
