Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, the leader of the Tipra Motha party, left the fast unto death agitation at Baramura in the mid-way claiming that ‘central leaders wanted to meet him’ on Wednesday.

Pradyot Kishore did not disclose whom he would meet in Delhi but said: “After returning from the Delhi meeting, I would discuss the issue with our leaders in Agartala and then the next course of action would be decided.

Speculations arise that his return he would claim of some sort of assurances from central leadership and the subsequently withdraw his fast unto death agitation.

In Wednesday morning, however, as per pre-announcement, thousands of Janajati people led by opposition Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leaders joined the stir (demonstration) on National Highway-8 at Hatoi Katar (Baramura).

TMP President Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl, opposition leader and senior party leader Animesh Debabrma, the party’s all 13 MLAs and members of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) took part in the demonstration on Wednesday, among others.

Notably, former Congress leaders Tapas Dey and Lakshi Nag, despite their Bengali background, participated in the agitation, advocating for Greater Tipraland.

Amidst heightened tensions, a substantial security presence was deployed at the demonstration site to forestall any untoward incidents. Debbarman’s earlier meeting with Home Ministry officials in Delhi failed to yield the written assurances sought, emphasizing the party’s insistence on constitutional and land rights for the tribals.

In recent developments, Debbarman engaged with senior leaders of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and state minister Sukla Charan Noatia to deliberate on TMP’s demands. As tensions simmer and discussions ensue, the broader political landscape in Tripura remains poised for potential shifts.
