In a assurance to boost Tripura’s energy efficiency through renewable sources, the state government and the Power Department are actively pursuing initiatives to meet present energy demands while ensuring conservation.

Minister for Power Ratan Lal Nath made this announcement during the inauguration of a programme at Urja Bhavan, organised by Tripura Power Transmission Limited (TPTL) to commemorate National Energy Conservation Day.

Addressing the gathering under the theme “Energy Transition = Energy Security,” Nath emphasised the critical role of energy conservation in combating climate change. He highlighted the state’s efforts to double electricity production using renewable means, particularly relying on solar energy and biomass due to limited water and wind resources.

The minister outlined the state’s commitment to doubling electricity production through renewable means, focusing on solar energy and biomass due to the limited availability of water and wind resources.

Nath disclosed plans to establish five power storage facilities in Dhalai and North Districts, with one already finalised at North Longtrai, ensuring an additional 800 MW for the state. Collaborating with OTPC, the department aims to deploy battery storage units across Tripura.

Nath emphasised ongoing initiatives, such as deploying 15,000 solar street lights, distributing over a lakh solar study lamp, and installing solar pumps across 4,348 acres of agricultural land. Future plans involve placing solar panels on key institutions’ rooftops, including Tripura University, NIELIT College, and NIIT, as well as 23 designated buildings in the capital city.

Nath urged expedited project completion, emphasising the urgency of the transition to renewable energy. As Tripura takes significant strides towards a sustainable energy future, these initiatives mark a pivotal moment in the state’s commitment to environmental responsibility and energy security.
