In response to the escalating threat of natural disasters, the Tripura State Government has undertaken proactive measures to bolster disaster management capabilities and minimize potential losses.

As part of this initiative, a workshop on ‘Disaster Management with Media’ was held at the Conference Hall of the State Guest House on Tuesday, organized by the District Magistrate and Collector of the West District.

The workshop delved into various aspects of disaster management, with a particular focus on earthquakes, a significant concern for the region.

Engineer Sumit Majumder identified and elucidated common deficiencies in building construction in Agartala and across the state, emphasizing the heightened risk during earthquakes.

Majumder also highlighted the state government’s establishment of an institute to train masons in construction methods, ensuring safety and sustainability.

Dr. Sarat Das, the State Project Officer, shared alarming statistics, revealing that deaths due to drowning had doubled in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching 22 cases. He commended the role of volunteers, particularly the Apada Mitra, in disaster management initiatives.

Dr. Das also praised the government’s introduction of evacuation drills in schools across the state every third Saturday.

Additionally, Dr. Das pointed out specific incidents, such as the sinking of a village in Jampui Hills after the construction of NH and a cave-in incident on NH at Manu Bazar. He emphasized the importance of proper soil evaluation before undertaking developmental projects to prevent such incidents in the future.

The workshop aimed to increase awareness, preparedness, and collaboration in the face of potential disasters.
