Tripura Legislators cast their vote to elect the new President of India on Monday. He voting began sharp at 10 am as scheduled and as many as 57 MLAs cast their votes from all political parties- BJP, IPFT, Left Front and Congress. Out of totral 60 MLAs two CPM’s Sudan Das and BJP’s Rampada Jamatia were not in Agartala but the cast their votes in New Delhi Parliament House. On the other hand IPFT’s Brishaketu Debbarma abstained from voting since he had earlier resigned from the legislature—though his resignation papers were not accepted as yet by Speaker Ratan Lal Nath.
Officials said on Tuesday morning the Ballot box containing all the votes would be flown to New Delhi on Tuesday and deposited in the office of the Returning officer (Rajya Sabha Secretariat, New Delhi).
As per the Election Commission, of a total of 771 Members of Parliament entitled to vote (5 vacant), and similarly out of total 4,025 Members of the Legislative Assemblies entitled to vote (6 vacant and 2 disqualified), over 99 per cent cast their vote on Monday. Hundred per cent voting by MLAs was reported from Chattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Puducherry, Sikkim, Mizoram and Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to the media Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha told the media he was confident about a landslide victory of NDA ‘s Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu. Dr Saha added there is no chance of cross-voting in Tripura. He urged the opposition party MLAs to support and vote for Murmu as the first time an indigenous person was nominated as a candidate.
Deputy CM Jishnu Dev Varma said.” BJP has created history by nominating a candidate like Murmu for the post of President”. The Deputy Chief Minister thanked PM Narendra Modi for selecting Draupadi Murmu as the Presidential Candidate.. Lone Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman opined the Presidential election was crucial as it would decide the future of the democracy in the country.
