Political tension escalates in Tripura as Yuva Morcha leaders accuse Congress workers of verbally abusing and attempting to assault their president in Dharmanagar. A formal police complaint has been filed, demanding strict action and temporary suspension of political programmes in Kadamtala.

Political tensions that simmered through Dharmanagar on Wednesday escalated further when the conflict spread to Kadamtala, leading to a late-night police complaint by the local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). The Kadamtala Mandal Yuva Morcha has accused Congress workers of verbally abusing and attempting to assault their president, Amitabha Nath, during Wednesday afternoon’s unrest in Dharmanagar.

According to the written complaint submitted at Kadamtala Police Station around 8 PM, Amitabha Nath had travelled to Dharmanagar earlier in the day along with his mother for routine banking work. The complaint alleges that while they were near the Congress party office, several Congress workers suddenly emerged, verbally abused Nath using highly obscene language, and attempted to attack him without provocation.

Yuva Morcha members claimed that Nath narrowly escaped the situation with assistance from personnel of Dharmanagar Police Station, who intervened promptly and escorted him away from the hostile environment. No physical injuries were reported, but the alleged attempt at assault has triggered widespread anger among Yuva Morcha supporters.

Following the incident, a large number of Yuva Morcha leaders, workers, and supporters gathered at Kadamtala Police Station to condemn the alleged attack. The gathering continued for several hours as the organisation demanded swift action from law enforcement authorities. The written complaint was formally submitted to Officer-in-Charge L. Sangun, who assured the delegation that the matter would be investigated thoroughly.

In their complaint, Yuva Morcha leaders emphasised that Kadamtala has only recently regained stability after last year’s tense situation at the Kadamtala market. They expressed concerns that any renewed political confrontation could destabilise the region once again. The organisation stressed that no political activity should be allowed that could incite unrest during this sensitive period.

“We demand that no permission be granted for politically motivated gatherings, rallies, or programmes for the next few days. The atmosphere is volatile, and allowing such activities could worsen the situation at any moment,” the Yuva Morcha delegation reportedly told police authorities.

The complaint also called for immediate identification of all Congress workers allegedly involved in the incident and urged the administration to initiate strict disciplinary and legal action against them. According to the Yuva Morcha, the attack was not an isolated act but a deliberate attempt to intimidate a young political leader who has been actively working in the region.

Local residents in Kadamtala expressed mixed reactions. Some voiced concern that the clash between the Congress and Yuva Morcha could disrupt the fragile peace maintained in the region over the past several months. Others felt that political parties should refrain from confrontational actions during routine disagreements, as such conflicts tend to create fear among citizens and disrupt daily life.

Although the Congress leadership in the region has not yet issued an official statement, several local political observers believe that both sides are likely to escalate their counter-accusations in the coming days. With the political environment already tense due to recent events in Dharmanagar, parties appear increasingly sensitive to incidents involving their leaders and workers.

Police sources indicated that the matter is being taken seriously. “The complaint has been registered, and preliminary inquiry has begun. Statements will be collected from all sides, and further legal action will proceed based on evidence,” an officer familiar with the investigation said.

The incident marks yet another flashpoint in Tripura’s politically charged environment, where even routine civic activities can quickly become entangled in partisan disputes. Political analysts say Wednesday’s confrontation highlights the broader mistrust and polarisation prevailing between major political groups in the region.

As the investigation proceeds, citizens and community leaders hope that law enforcement agencies will ensure a fair and unbiased inquiry. Maintaining peace in Kadamtala, they say, must remain the highest priority, especially given the sensitive history of the region.

For now, all eyes remain on the administration’s next steps—whether strict action will be taken against the alleged attackers, and whether restrictions on political programmes will be imposed to prevent further escalation. The coming days are expected to reveal how both the police and political leaders respond to the growing tension.
