A transformative workshop on Operation and Maintenance (O&M) and Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) for the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) recently concluded in Tripura. Organized by CML-Tata Trusts and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, the event witnessed robust participation from Implementation Support Agencies (ISAs) and key stakeholders.
The training began with an insightful first session, attended by about sixty people, comprising consultants from IEC, members of the State Project Management Unit, and members of ISA. Delving into macro perspectives, the training module outlined a roadmap for effective O&M practices within the JJM framework.
A core aspect of the workshop was the emphasis on the pivotal role of Water Users Committees during the O&M phase. Participants were equipped with essential knowledge on the ‘pancha sutras’ guiding efficient operation and maintenance practices, fostering sustainability.
The training provided practical insights into calculating annual O&M costs and monthly water tariffs, crucial for financial management within JJM schemes. It underscored the sustainability pillars, covering financial, institutional, and source sustainability aspects comprehensively.
Highlighting the significance of pump operators in water supply system functionality, the workshop introduced SBCC Tools, stressing effective communication strategies to drive positive behavioural changes in communities. The emphasis was placed on documentation and transparency practices for Water Users Committees.
Interactive sessions facilitated the exchange of ideas, promoting best practices among participants. The workshop emphasized the imperative of fostering positive behavioural changes for long-term project success, coupled with understanding the financial dynamics of O&M to ensure sustainability.
Participants lauded the workshop for its invaluable insights, expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts between CML-Tata Trusts and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department. The event has laid a strong foundation for enhanced partnerships and shared commitment towards realizing the goals of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Tripura.
