A growing drug crisis in the areas under Shantir Bazar police station has left the local youth devastated, with many falling prey to addiction and subsequently ruining their lives. Concerned over the future of their children and a perceived lack of effective police intervention, residents—particularly women—have taken matters into their own hands.
In Rajapur village, a women-led vigilance group has formed a committee aimed at curbing the drug trade. Since its formation, the group has been actively patrolling the area and has successfully apprehended several drug peddlers, handing them over to the police along with narcotics in their possession.
However, locals have raised serious allegations against Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bapi Debarma, accusing him of releasing offenders in exchange for bribes. In protest, the women residents gheraoed the local Monpathar police outpost on Friday night after submitting a fresh batch of accused drug peddlers.
The protesters demanded swift and exemplary punishment for those involved in the drug trade and called for the immediate transfer of SDPO Bapi Debarma from Shantir Bazar. They insisted that a transparent and responsible officer be appointed to restore public faith in law enforcement.
