Kumarghat Police recovered unlicensed fire arms from a local Trinamool Congress leader in the area. Vice president of the Trinamool Congress Kumarghat block Nitai Datta and his son Nirmal Datta were immediately arrested and booked under the Arms Act. They will be produced before the court on Wednesday.

Sources said, acting on a specific tip off Kumarghat police led by  SDPO Kamal Debbarma with huge force raided the house of Datta and recovered one 7mm pistol and 5 rounds of bullets and an airgun. The raid was conducted at around 11 am and the news of recovery of the fire arms spread like wild fire creating huge sensation in Kumarghat.

Based on specific information, police personnel led by SDPO Kamal Debbarma conducted the raid at his house at around 11 am on Tuesday in Sukanta nagar area under Kumarghat police station.

Police said,   Nirmal during interrogation confessed that he had purchased the .9 mm pistol from Bihar.

Senior officers here admitted that there were reports many political elements were having  illegal and unlicensed firearms.

Only recently there was a shooting incident on Airport road where miscreants openly shot at two persons over business rivalry.

“While most of the firearms were coming to state from Bangladesh, nowadays arms were reported to have been brought from Bihar and UP also. There were well organized arms rackets who mostly sell small arms and their buyers were mostly political rowdies and known criminals”, said a senior officer here.

He said, there would be raids in other parts of the state also to recover the illegal arms as the criminals having such weapons might create serious problems before and during the ensuing elections.
