Tension gripped Jamjuri and other parts of Udaipur following attack of former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb’s ancestral home. The attack was allegedly committed by CPM activists at around 7.30 pm. Vehicles and scooters parked infront of the house at Jamjuri were damaged. Deb was in Agartala.

The attack was launched at a time when deb’s family was readying for Batshorik Shraddha ( annual rituals) of MP’s later father Hirudhan Deb. Several saints and people from outside including a Supreme Court lawyer gathered at the residence as the preparations were going on in full swing.

The CPM also had a political programme near the house which was attended by former CPM minister and presently MLA Ratan Bhowmik.

BJP leaders alleged that it was at the instance of Bhowmik that the CPM cadres who were returning from the programme suddenly went violent began stone pelting and damaging the vehicles and scooters, bikes parked in front of the house.

Immediately police rushed to the spot with huge posse of force and security arrangements were beefed up in and around entire Udaipur as the tension brewed.

“It was an unprovoked attack and apparently pre planned”, said a BJP leader over telephone from Udaipur. He said, all were well aware of the Wednesday’s programme at Deb’s residence.

“The intention of the CPM cadres were clear, they wanted to create trouble and tension before the elections. Their idea was to create law and order situation – as they knew very well that any attack on the former Chief Minister’s house might trigger massive retaliation”, he added.
