Unsettled by the police crackdown on ganja and smuggling of other narcotic substances across the state, the smugglers seem to have adopted new tactics to get away with the police dragnet by involving children in the nefarious nexus.
In a successful operation, police at Teliamura under Tripura’s Khowai district seized a considerable quantity of ganja hidden in teddy bears and other toys at the Trishabari railway station. According to police, acting on a tip off the traffic unit of Teliamura police detained some suspects and searched their luggage that led to the seizure. More than 44 kgs of ganja stuffed in 19 packets were seized. Ganja packets were also hidden in the toys of the children.
Obviously, the smugglers tried to hoodwink the police using women and children as couriers of the narcotics.
The police also arrested two ladies, two men and a minor girl in connection with the case. Police sources said that the estimated cost of the seized items would be above Rs 2 lakh and the detained persons are residents of various parts of Sonamiura sub-division.
Speaking on the issue, Teliamura traffic unit DSP Bikramjit Sukla Das said, “As per the preliminary reports, the seized consignment was supposed to be dropped at Guwahati. Further investigation is underway”. The arrested youth are identified as Yusuf Miah and Nayeem Hossain. They were arrested from the Rani Kamalabati express train.
