Unakoti in Tripura has been selected as an iconic venue for International Yoga Day 2025. The ancient rock site will host a grand celebration on June 21, with top officials attending and Minister Sudhangshu Das expected to inaugurate.

The Government of Tripura has officially selected the ancient rock carvings site of Unakoti as the iconic venue to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21, 2025. This decision aligns with the Central Government’s initiative to observe the globally recognized day at culturally significant and visually captivating heritage sites across the country.

The announcement marks a moment of pride for the people of Tripura, especially Unakoti district, which is home to centuries-old Shaivite rock carvings and massive bas-relief sculptures that have long attracted pilgrims and tourists alike.

A high-level preparatory meeting was held on Wednesday in the conference hall of the Unakoti District Magistrate’s office to coordinate and oversee the arrangements ahead of the Yoga Day celebrations. The meeting was attended by several key administrative and political figures, highlighting the importance the state government is placing on the event.

Among the attendees were Amalendu Das, Sabhadhipati of Unakoti Zilla Parishad; Santosh Dhar, Deputy Sabhadhipati; Dr. Tamal Majumder, District Magistrate of Unakoti District; Sampada Das Pal, Chairman of Chandipur Panchayat Samiti; Binay Singh, Vice Chairman; N.S. Chakma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kumarghat Subdivision; Bima Sinha, Additional Superintendent of Police, Unakoti District; and Debpriya Das, BDO of Chandipur Block, among other officials.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the logistics, security arrangements, participation of local communities, cultural programs, and coordination with various departments to ensure the event is conducted smoothly and effectively. Officials emphasized the need to maintain cleanliness and ensure accessibility for the hundreds of participants expected to attend from different parts of the state.

Following the meeting, Amalendu Das stated, “Like previous years, Unakoti district will celebrate Yoga Day with great pomp and show. However, this year’s Yoga Day holds added significance for Unakoti, as the Central Government has decided to celebrate Yoga Day in a grand manner at selected iconic locations across the country, and Unakoti has been chosen as such an iconic location for Tripura.”

He further added that the event is expected to draw attention to the historical and spiritual richness of Unakoti, bringing the site into national focus. With Unakoti being included among the iconic sites selected for the celebration, it is anticipated that tourism in the region will see a significant boost.

According to officials, the Fisheries and ARDD Minister, Sudhangshu Das, is expected to inaugurate the event. Various cultural performances, group yoga demonstrations, awareness sessions on wellness and Ayurveda, and interactive activities for the youth are being planned to mark the occasion.

The state government’s decision to host Yoga Day at such a historically and spiritually rich site underscores Tripura’s commitment to blending heritage, health, and holistic well-being. Unakoti, often referred to as the “Angkor Wat of the Northeast,” offers a breathtaking backdrop for the practice of yoga, with its massive rock reliefs of Lord Shiva and other deities carved into hill faces.

With just a few days to go until June 21, the spotlight is firmly on Unakoti. The district is ready to host a memorable Yoga Day celebration that not only aligns with the national mission of promoting wellness but also shines a light on Tripura’s unique cultural heritage.
