Two persons were reportedly detained by residents at Puratan Rajnagar in Tripura’s Bishalgarh with a pistol and a Chinese knife. One was later admitted to GBP Hospital following an alleged mob assault, while police investigation and official confirmation remain awaited.
Two persons were reportedly detained by local residents with a pistol and a sharp-edged weapon described as a Chinese knife at Puratan Rajnagar under Bishalgarh subdivision in the early hours of Thursday. One of the detained persons was later admitted to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala after allegedly being assaulted by members of an angry crowd.
According to local sources, the incident took place at around 2 am near a Durga Puja pavilion, where residents reportedly noticed two persons behaving suspiciously. The individuals were identified as Mamun Mia and Moynal Mia.
Sources said the duo allegedly created a disturbance in the locality, prompting residents to approach and confront them. During the confrontation, a pistol and a sharp-edged weapon, commonly referred to as a Chinese knife, were reportedly found in their possession.
The incident soon drew the attention of other residents, and a crowd gathered at the spot. Amid the growing tension, the two men were reportedly detained by local people before being handed over to Madhupur police for further investigation.
However, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. It has not yet been independently established what led to the alleged disturbance or how the weapons were recovered. The authenticity of the pistol and the intended use of the weapons also remain unconfirmed.
According to local sources, one of the detained persons sustained injuries during the incident and was subsequently taken to GBP Hospital in Agartala for medical treatment. Allegations have emerged that he was beaten by a section of the crowd before being handed over to the police.
The precise circumstances in which the injuries occurred have not been independently verified. Details regarding the injured person’s identity, medical condition and the severity of the injuries were not immediately available.
The incident has raised concerns over public safety and the need for a proper investigation into the reported recovery of weapons in a residential area, particularly during the ongoing festive period.
Madhupur police are expected to investigate the incident, verify the reported seizure of the weapons and establish the sequence of events leading to the detention of the two individuals. Investigators will also need to determine whether the pistol was functional and whether the accused were involved in any criminal activity.
