Two people, including a 17-year-old boy, died in separate incidents in Tripura’s Teliamura during Durga Puja. A scooter accident claimed the teenager’s life on Maha Navami, while an Agartala contractor drowned in a pond on Vijayadashami.

Two people, including a 17-year-old teenager, died in separate tragic incidents in Teliamura subdivision during Durga Puja, casting a shadow over the festive celebrations. The incidents occurred on Maha Navami and Vijayadashami, leaving the victims’ families and local communities in mourning.

In the first incident, a 17-year-old boy, identified as Jeet Sarkar, died after the scooter he was travelling on reportedly lost control and crashed near Loknath Ashram at Chakmaghat along the Assam-Agartala National Highway on Tuesday night, during Maha Navami.

According to information available, Jeet was travelling on a red scooter with another teenager, identified as Dwip Chowdhury, also aged 17. The two were reportedly heading from Teliamura towards Chakmaghat when the accident occurred.

The scooter allegedly went out of control and collided with a vehicle or a banyan tree beside the highway. The exact circumstances of the crash are yet to be established.

Local residents reported that both teenagers sustained serious injuries in the accident. Personnel from the Teliamura Fire Service subsequently reached the spot, rescued the injured riders and transported them to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital for medical treatment.

After examining the injured teenager, doctors declared Jeet Sarkar dead. Dwip Chowdhury, who sustained injuries in the crash, was later shifted to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical treatment.

The accident has raised concerns among local residents about road safety, particularly regarding the presence of two minors travelling on a scooter along a national highway. However, the circumstances surrounding the accident and the relevant vehicle and driving details remain subject to investigation.

Teliamura police have initiated a probe into the incident and reportedly seized the damaged scooter as part of the investigation. Further details about the cause of the crash are awaited.

In a separate incident on Vijayadashami, a 34-year-old contractor from Agartala drowned while bathing in a pond at Netajinagar in Teliamura subdivision.

The deceased was identified as Saptarshi Das, a resident of the Dhaleswar area of Agartala. According to the available information, Das had visited his in-laws’ residence in Netajinagar to take part in the Durga Puja festivities.

After completing the Durga Puja immersion rituals, he reportedly went to bathe in a pond near the residence. During the incident, he drowned in the water. The circumstances leading to his drowning have not been fully established.

The two incidents occurred during one of Tripura’s major festive periods, turning celebrations into a time of grief for the families concerned. While the first incident involved a fatal road accident, the second involved drowning during a post-immersion bath.
