Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha laid the foundation stone of the ₹900-crore Shija Super Speciality Hospital at RK Nagar, Agartala, aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure, generating employment, and transforming Tripura into a regional health hub.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the proposed Shija Super Speciality Hospital at R.K. Nagar under Khayerpur assembly constituency, around 20 kilometers from Agartala. The ambitious project, which will be implemented by the Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur, is expected to transform the state’s medical landscape and make advanced healthcare more accessible to the people of Tripura.
The state government has allotted around 28 acres of land for the establishment of the hospital. According to officials, the project will involve an investment of approximately ₹900 crore, making it one of the largest healthcare investments in Tripura’s history. The hospital authority also plans to open a medical college and nursing institute as part of the long-term expansion, creating a comprehensive health and education ecosystem in the state.
CM: Shija Project to Create Jobs and Boost Healthcare
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed optimism that the project will not only strengthen Tripura’s healthcare system but also open new avenues for employment generation. “This super-speciality hospital will ensure that people of Tripura receive advanced medical services within the state itself. It will also create numerous job opportunities for doctors, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals,” Dr. Saha said.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the state government is committed to providing full support to ensure timely implementation of the project. He also urged the local residents to cooperate with the authorities and help make the hospital a symbol of development for the region.
Dr. Saha highlighted the state’s growing attractiveness to investors, saying, “Our government has created an enabling environment where investors find Tripura a place of ease of doing business and opportunity to prosper. It is truly encouraging to see Shija Hospital, Manipur, investing in Tripura to establish a super-speciality hospital, medical college, and nursing institute.”
He added that the initiative is a part of Tripura’s journey towards becoming a ‘Health Hub’ in the Northeast and a step toward achieving ‘Viksit Tripura’, aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Forensic Science Education to Get a Boost
During the event, Dr. Saha also shared insights from his recent visit to Ahmedabad, where he met the Gujarat Chief Minister to discuss possible collaborations between large states and smaller ones like Tripura. He also attended an event at the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), where he emphasized the importance of introducing a Forensic Odontology course in NFSU Tripura.
Explaining the relevance of the course, he said, “Forensic Odontology plays a vital role in identifying victims in disasters or accidents, such as the recent Ahmedabad flight crash. Introducing such specialized courses will help Tripura build advanced forensic capabilities.”
Commitment to Quality and Skilled Medical Workforce
Dr. Saha reiterated that the health sector is one of the strongest pillars of a progressive society and urged doctors and medical professionals to continuously upgrade their skills to meet the growing healthcare demands. “Health is a big support system in any development framework. Those working in this sector carry immense responsibility. Our aim is to ensure that super-speciality services are made available to the people right here in Tripura,” he said.
Dignitaries and Stakeholders Present
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Khayerpur MLA Ratan Chakraborty, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, and Dr. Palin Khundongbam, Chairman and Managing Director of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Imphal.
Dr. Palin Khundongbam expressed gratitude to the Tripura government for its support and said that Shija’s expansion into Tripura marks a new chapter in regional healthcare collaboration. “We are committed to making Tripura a center of excellence in healthcare, education, and research,” he stated.
A Vision for a Healthier Tripura
The establishment of Shija Super Speciality Hospital is expected to drastically reduce the need for patients from Tripura to travel outside the state for advanced treatment. With state-of-the-art infrastructure and modern facilities, the hospital aims to offer specialized services across disciplines such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, and orthopedics.
The ₹900-crore investment represents a strong partnership between the public and private sectors in promoting healthcare excellence in the Northeast. Once completed, the hospital will not only serve the people of Tripura but also cater to neighboring states, further establishing Tripura as a growing medical hub in the region.
