Tripura’s Village Committee elections are set for September 27 in a single phase. The State Election Commission has begun preparations, including a workshop for 52 BDOs and Additional BDOs designated as Returning Officers. An all-party meeting will be convened soon, while police will assess sensitive areas and plan layered security arrangements.
Preparations for the upcoming Village Committee (VC) elections in Tripura have gained momentum, with the State Election Commission (SEC) conducting a workshop for officials who will be entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the crucial polls. The Commission is also planning to convene an all-party meeting within the next few days as part of the preparations.
The Village Committee elections are scheduled to be held on September 27 in a single phase, in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling. With the polling date approaching, the SEC has intensified its preparatory activities to ensure that the elections are conducted smoothly, efficiently and in accordance with established rules.
On Monday, the Commission organised a special workshop for Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Additional BDOs who are expected to be designated as Returning Officers (ROs) for the elections. A total of 52 BDOs and Additional BDOs participated in the workshop.
State Election Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Chakravarty said the training programme was aimed at sensitising the officials about various aspects of the electoral process. He said the Commission was undertaking all necessary preparations well ahead of polling day.
“The village committee elections are in the offing. All preparatory exercises are underway to ensure that the polls are conducted effectively,” Chakravarty said.
According to the State Election Commissioner, the workshop covered several important areas, including election rules and regulations, enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, counting procedures and other matters associated with conducting the polls.
The SEC is also preparing to bring political parties and other stakeholders into discussions ahead of the elections. Asked about the proposed all-party meeting, Chakravarty said the meeting would be convened soon and was likely to take place within the next few days.
The proposed meeting is expected to provide a platform for political parties to discuss election-related issues and facilitate coordination ahead of the September 27 polling.
Meanwhile, law-and-order preparedness has also emerged as a key component of the election arrangements. Officials of the State Election Commission said separate meetings would be held in coordination with the Tripura Police to assess the security situation across areas going to the polls.
The meetings will focus on identifying sensitive and hyper-sensitive locations and assessing potential security risks. Based on the assessment and suggestions received from various stakeholders, authorities will formulate a multi-layered security arrangement for the elections.

The SEC’s latest measures indicate that administrative, electoral and security preparations are being undertaken simultaneously as Tripura moves closer to the Village Committee polls. With the Returning Officers being trained and an all-party meeting expected shortly, the Commission is working to ensure that the September 27 elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.
