Khowai District Hospital successfully performed complex gynaecological surgery on a 40-year-old woman suffering from severe menstrual bleeding for nearly six months, providing the treatment free of cost under Ayushman Bharat. The successful total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy highlights the hospital’s growing capacity to provide advanced healthcare services locally.

Doctors at Khowai District Hospital have successfully performed a complex gynaecological surgery on a 40-year-old woman who had been suffering from severe health complications, including abnormal and excessive menstrual bleeding, for nearly six months.

The patient, identified as Manda Debnath, wife of Ram Debnath and a resident of Sonatala in Khowai district, had initially sought medical attention at the hospital’s Mother and Child Health (MCH) Clinic. She was examined by obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Arghyamalya Debbarma.

Following a detailed medical evaluation, including blood tests, ultrasonography and other necessary investigations, doctors determined that surgical intervention was required. The patient’s family subsequently provided consent for the procedure, following which she was admitted to Khowai District Hospital on August 19.

The surgery was conducted on August 21 under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The procedure lasted approximately one hour and 10 minutes and involved a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

According to hospital authorities, the complicated surgical procedure was completed successfully through coordinated efforts between the surgeon, anaesthesiologist, nursing staff and operation theatre team. The patient responded well following the surgery and remained under medical supervision during her recovery. She was subsequently discharged on Monday.

The surgical team included Dr Arghyamalya Debbarma, obstetrician and gynaecologist; Dr Biswajit Debbarma, anaesthesiologist; nursing officers Trinmoy Debbarma and Sujata Das; OT assistant Santa Kumar Tripura; and GDA staff member Aravinda Nam.

Hospital authorities said the entire treatment, including the surgery, was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The initiative enabled the patient to receive specialised medical care without having to bear the financial burden associated with such a complex procedure.

The patient’s family expressed gratitude to the doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers for their dedicated treatment and care. They also appreciated the hospital authorities for providing the required surgical facilities locally.

The successful operation was reported by the Khowai District Chief Medical Officer. The achievement is being viewed as a significant step in strengthening specialised healthcare services at Khowai District Hospital and reducing the need for patients to travel outside the district for complex gynaecological procedures.

The successful surgery also underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and access to specialised medical services for women experiencing prolonged or abnormal menstrual bleeding.
