Tripura to Launch ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ as Part of National Agricultural Awareness Drive

As part of the nationwide agricultural outreach initiative ahead of the upcoming Kharif cropping season, the state of Tripura is set to launch the ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ on Thursday, May 29. The campaign is part of a broader effort spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to enhance awareness among farmers regarding sustainable agricultural practices, government support schemes, and cutting-edge agri-technologies.

State-Level Launch from Bishramganj

Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Ratanlal Nath, addressed the media on Wednesday at the State Secretariat, announcing that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will inaugurate the state-level programme from Bishramganj in Sepahijala district. The campaign will run until June 12, spanning two crucial weeks in the agricultural calendar.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Nath revealed that Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Arjun Munda, is also expected to participate in the campaign during one of its days in Tripura, underscoring the central government’s active involvement in the drive.

Campaign to Cover 864 Locations, Engage Over 1.72 Lakh Farmers

The awareness drive will be extensive, covering 864 locations across the state and involving more than 1.72 lakh farmers. According to Nath, the campaign has been meticulously structured to maximize grassroots participation. For each location, three dedicated committees have been formed comprising experts and officials. These committees will conduct three meetings per day, ensuring repeated engagement and wide coverage.

To facilitate knowledge sharing and community mobilization, every location will also feature the presence of a progressive farmer—a peer leader who exemplifies success in adopting modern and sustainable agricultural practices.

The campaign will see collaborative efforts from multiple departments and institutions. Representatives from the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Agriculture and Fisheries Colleges, Veterinary College, and agricultural scientists will be part of the committees to guide and mentor farmers.

Krishi Raths and Technology Demonstrations

As a unique outreach component, 24 mobile ‘Krishi Raths’—information vans equipped with audio-visual aids and printed materials—will travel to remote and rural areas, spreading awareness and engaging directly with farmers on-site. These raths will act as mobile information hubs, showcasing modern practices, schemes, and success stories.

Tripura’s Agricultural Growth Since 2018

Minister Nath also provided an overview of Tripura’s agricultural achievements since the formation of the new state government in 2018. He emphasized a remarkable tenfold increase in organic farming, with the cultivated area expanding from just 2,000 hectares to 20,000 hectares. He attributed this success to policy reforms, farmer incentives, and adoption of environment-friendly techniques.

He further noted that the current year is expected to witness record-breaking agricultural production in the state, largely due to the introduction and adoption of advanced technologies including natural farming methods and the use of drones for precision agriculture.

Background: Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan

The ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’ is a central government campaign launched across the country as part of a special outreach initiative to prepare farmers for the Kharif season, which typically begins with the onset of the southwest monsoon in June. The campaign is aimed at sensitizing farmers about available government schemes (such as PM-KISAN, PMFBY, and e-NAM), modern and sustainable farming techniques, and the importance of diversification, value addition, and market linkages.

Tripura’s rollout of the campaign is expected to further bolster its agricultural transformation journey and align the state with India’s broader vision of building a self-reliant, prosperous, and technology-driven farming sector.
