The murder of Tripura student Angel Chakma has taken a significant legal turn after police in Uttarakhand filed a detailed 649-page chargesheet against five accused individuals, including two minors. However, the prime accused, Yagya Raj, remains absconding, prompting intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to secure his arrest.
The tragic incident occurred on December 9, 2025, outside a liquor shop in Selakui, a locality near Dehradun in Uttarakhand. According to investigators, the confrontation began when Angel and his brother Michael were allegedly subjected to ethnic slurs. What initially appeared to be verbal harassment soon escalated into a brutal assault. Angel sustained critical injuries and battled for his life for 14 days before succumbing, triggering widespread outrage in Tripura and among student communities across India.
Circle Officer Bhaskar Lal confirmed that the chargesheet was submitted on February 8 and includes detailed witness statements, forensic findings, and CCTV footage that allegedly implicate six individuals. Five of them are currently in custody, while efforts continue to track down Yagya Raj, who investigators believe may have fled to Nepal.
Authorities are preparing to seek a Red Corner Notice through Interpol to facilitate international cooperation in locating and extraditing the absconding accused. Meanwhile, a reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest. Two dedicated police teams are conducting search operations along border areas.
Beyond the legal proceedings, Angel Chakma’s death has ignited a broader national conversation about ethnic discrimination and the safety of students from Northeast India studying in other states. Activists and community leaders argue that the case reflects deeper social prejudices and have called for stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws and enhanced campus security measures.
Student organizations in multiple states have organized protests and memorial gatherings, demanding swift justice and institutional reforms. Many have emphasized that the incident is not isolated but indicative of recurring challenges faced by youth from marginalized communities.
