Tripura Police seized 32 kg cannabis in Jatrapur, arresting a trafficker during a swift operation led by Officer-in-Charge Partha Nath Bhowmik. The seizure highlights intensified efforts to curb cross-border narcotics smuggling in the region.

Police in Jatrapur seized 32 kilograms of dry cannabis and arrested a suspected trafficker during a well-coordinated operation on Wednesday evening. The operation was led by newly appointed Officer-in-Charge Partha Nath Bhowmik, marking an early success in his tenure.

Acting on a credible tip-off, personnel from the Jatrapur Police Station, along with the Tripura State Rifles, laid an ambush near the Kalibari area under Kathalia Gram Panchayat. The location, situated along the Kathalia-Thalibari road, has been under surveillance due to its suspected use as a transit route for illegal substances.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the team intercepted a black Maruti Suzuki Baleno bearing registration number TR01-AS-7809. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of two sacks filled with dry cannabis, weighing a total of 32 kilograms. The driver, identified as Rubel Hossain (25), a resident of Banshpukur Panchayat, was immediately taken into custody.

According to police officials, preliminary investigation suggests that the seized consignment was intended for cross-border smuggling, raising concerns about the continuing use of border regions for narcotics trafficking. Authorities believe that such operations are often part of larger organized networks operating across state and international boundaries.

A case has been registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and the accused has been produced before the court. Police have sought custody remand to further interrogate the suspect and uncover potential links to a wider trafficking network.

Speaking to the media, OC Bhowmik stated that the operation reflects a renewed focus on dismantling drug supply chains in vulnerable border areas. He emphasized that strict vigilance and intelligence-driven policing would continue to be prioritized under his leadership.

The seizure is being viewed as a major breakthrough for the district police, reinforcing their commitment to combating illegal drug trade and ensuring public safety in the region.
