AMC to renovate Madhyapara Pond in Agartala after years of neglect. Mayor Dipak Majumdar inspects site, assures removal of encroachments and restoration. Project aims to revive historic water body, improve environment, and benefit local residents.

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is preparing to begin renovation work on the historic Madhyapara Pond, a long-neglected yet vital water resource in Agartala. The initiative comes in response to sustained public demand and directives from state leadership to revive essential civic infrastructure.

On Thursday, Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar conducted a detailed inspection of the pond site, accompanied by Corporator Ratna Dutta and Municipal Commissioner Saju Vaheed A., along with other senior officials. The visit aimed to assess the current condition of the water body and finalize plans for its restoration.

Addressing reporters, Mayor Majumdar described Madhyapara Pond as an important and historic asset for the locality. He emphasized that AMC has consistently prioritized the rejuvenation of water bodies across the city in recent years, focusing on cleaning, restoration, and beautification. “This pond holds both environmental and social significance. Its revival will benefit the community and improve the ecological balance of the area,” he stated.

The renovation project has gained momentum following appeals from local residents and a request from Chief Minister Manik Saha. Residents have long highlighted the deteriorating condition of the pond, which has suffered from years of neglect, pollution, and encroachment.

Mayor Majumdar acknowledged that illegal encroachments had developed around parts of the pond over time. He assured that the AMC would take strict action to remove these encroachments promptly, ensuring that the restoration work proceeds without obstruction. The project is expected to include cleaning of the water body, strengthening of embankments, and overall beautification to make the pond usable once again.

Officials believe that the renovation will not only restore the pond’s utility but also contribute to environmental sustainability, groundwater recharge, and improved urban aesthetics. Once completed, the Madhyapara Pond is expected to serve as a community-friendly space, reinforcing AMC’s broader commitment to sustainable urban development.
