Tripura Police arrested another person for making “anti-national” comments online after the Pahalgam attack. Three individuals are now in custody, with investigations ongoing against others. Authorities warn strict legal action against provocative social media content that threatens communal harmony.

Tripura Police on Monday arrested another individual for making “anti-national” comments on social media following the Pahalgam terror attack, officials confirmed.

The accused, identified as Sameed Miah, hails from Maharani in southern Tripura’s Gomati district. According to a senior police official, two complaints regarding inflammatory social media content were recently received in the Gomati district. While one person was earlier arrested, the investigation continues against another individual.

Miah was apprehended from Telkachara under the jurisdiction of the Melagarh police station in Sepahijala district, but the operation was carried out by Gomati district police forces.

This arrest follows earlier action taken by Tripura Police when two persons—a retired teacher and a student leader—were arrested in Ambassa in Dhalai district. Both individuals are currently in judicial custody. In addition to these three arrests, six others have been either questioned, placed under police surveillance, or are facing legal proceedings for posting or sharing contentious remarks online related to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Authorities reported that all three arrested individuals were booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, reflecting the government’s firm stance on maintaining social harmony and national security.

Police have repeatedly urged citizens to refrain from making controversial or anti-national remarks, particularly those linked to religious sentiments or sensitive national issues, warning that such behavior could disturb communal harmony and law and order.

“Certain individuals were circulating provocative and misleading messages on social media. Please be aware that forwarding, sharing, or creating such content is an offence under the law. Stringent legal action will be taken against those involved,” the Tripura Police stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The police also appealed to the public to avoid spreading or paying heed to misleading or provocative content online. Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor online activity closely to prevent the spread of inflammatory messages and maintain peace in the state.
